I usually take out all the toys once every few days or every week depending and just mix the bedding all around. This way all the clean and dirty bedding get spread around evenly. I've used this method for over 2 years and it's worked well to the point that if I do this and scoop out some bedding and replace it with clean bedding I only do full cleans every 5 weeks. My hamsters a litter trained and live in very large cages though.
The European method would work quite well and is extremely similar to my method.
I also recommend putting a bit of his food where you don't want him to do his business as they are reluctant to poo or pee near their food.

Mine have no problem with pooing near their food! I have had a few cases where if a ham is a bit upset or nervous they will pee on their food to keep human predators away
