The German cages are great but I would think very carefully before putting a dwarf ham in a 100cm cage tbh, the ones I had in those big cages loved them but I only upgraded them after I'd had them for some time & was sure they would be happy & secure in there, for most dwarfs something the size of the Hamster Heaven or the Alaska is probably a better option.
I can never figure out why the Savic Mickey is so much more expensive than the HH really but it is basically the same cage if you use the tube blockers that come with it to block the holes & don't use the tubes & penthouse, the bar spacing may be fractionally larger but it's still perfectly fine for a dwarf.

No I can never figure that out either! It is still made by Savic and in their catalogue, but only Amazon seem to sell it. I suppose most people go for the Hamster heaven and it is intended for owners of mice technically with the narrow bar spacing. Which was I got it originally - to keep mice out lol as we occasionally get mice.

I think it could cost more due to having to use more metal with the smaller bars,as there would be more bars.Supposedly a US rat cage and a ferret cage, which are identical except for the bar spacing and are both by the same brand as one another, has a pricing difference for that reason, with the rat version costing more due to the extra metal needed with the extra bars because of the smaller spacing.

Also the cage in the picture is the Pennine Gypsy, which is a ridiculously tiny 38 cm x 25 cm.It is only large enough to be used as a carrier for any species, but never permanent housing

Actually, I think it might be a Savic Bristol cage which is 59cm x 38cm. So about the same size-ish as a mini duna. So it depends really on your ham's personality. I have mini dunas for my dwarf hams that have gotten overwhelmed by a bigger space.

The cage in the photo is the Savic Bristol cage which is 59 X 38cm which is on the small side. However the overall size of cage would depend upon what cage your hamster will feel comfortable in as some like big cages whereas other prefer smaller cages like the one in the photo, so the suitability would be determined by your hamster.

This cage has already been recommended but the Ferplast Duna Multy which would be suitable for a 6 month old Russian Hamster as there is no risk of them escaping or climbing up the bars and still a reasonable size. When I had my Russian Dwarf hamsters they were housed in a similar cage as I was afraid they could escape a barred cage. There are some other good suggestions which have been previously posted to.

thank you that has been very helpful it seems to be a toss up between the Alaska or the Ferplast Duna multy cage

thank you for all your replies but it does seem to be a toss up between the ferplast multy duna and the Alaska cage so if you could all tell me which one you think is better it would be a great help for my decision :0

thanks

Both my roborovskis are in barred cages (one in the alaska one in the grosvenor large rat and hamster cage). I prefer barred cages cos of them getting fresh air and me being able to chat to them through the bars!

Guess it depends if you like a bar style cage or the see through plastic one.

As Flowerfairy says I think it's really personal preference between tanks and cages. I have tanks as I have cats (although they don't go in the hamster room but there's a still a chance they could get in ) so I feel a bit happier with that and I like the deep substrate with no mess being kicked out. But it's not always as easy with taming than a bar cage with good front access can be. Although the multy has a lovely big grill so your hand isn't too "swoopy" from above.

It is very much a personal choice between tanks & barred cages, there's no right or wrong really.
If like velma you have other animals like cats or dogs then tanks are worth considering, they're also useful if you have a very determined bar climber although the one I had that really liked to climb bars was fine in a cage of a similar height to the Hamster Heaven carefully set up.
Like flowerfairy I prefer barred cages for the interaction it allows, ventilation & I find it much easier to arrange a nice set up for them in a barred cage than I do in a tank style cage.
I find very little substrate gets kicked out with bar spacing of 1cm or less, virtually none with Russian hams & not that much even with my determined Chinese diggers!
If you do decide to go for a barred cage the Alaska would be ok but you do have to put quite a lot of thought into your set up, if your budget would stretch to it do give some consideration to the Hamster Heaven which would be easier to keep safe.

Your ham is only just beginning to settle in so I wouldn't be in to much of a rush if you have her in something that is adequate short term, they can settle quicker & be easier to tame in a smaller cage then you can make your final decision once you get to know her & her needs a little better.
