how to secure bin cage lid?
I just finished making a bin cage for my large syrian rhubarb, but I'm a little worried about the lid. The mesh on the top is secure, i put zipties pretty close together all the way around and they are on tightly, but I'm more concerned about the lid not being on well enough. When I put the lid on the bin and close it, it seems like its on there, but it can easily be lifted up on the larger sides and although she's larger for a syrian i think she might be able to climb on her wheel and wiggle out.
Is there any way i could make sure its more tight so she cant climb out? I was thinking maybe tying two sides tightly with some twine and just having to untie it when i open the cage.
I havent put her in the cage yet because I'm waiting for her to wake up on her own first, and she might not be able to reach it, but its better to be safe than sorry!

Zip ties, lots and lots of zip ties They'd be more durable than twine, also if you do absolutely have to use twine you have to be extremely careful as some twine if ingested will cause serious problems(even if you think that will never ever happen, never take that risk).

Re: how to secure bin cage lid?
As long as she can't get to the twine that would help secure it & it wouldn't be too much of a hassle to undo when you want to take the lid off, the other option is to find something heavy to put on top & weigh it down so she can't push it up.

i guess nappy pins can work to keep the door locked down, if you have a diary padlock and key you can use that aswell, just dont lose the key, i would use this as a temporary thing, because getting a new cage would be a better idea, you hear a lot about about metal wire cages being bad, but to be honest all cages are like that, bin cages can be stressful for hamsters in the heat this summer, but metal wire cages can cause bar rub, bar rub is where a hamster rubs his face on the bars until bleeding or scar, this is not with all hamsters or cages though, as some cages are good design and will be good for your hamster

Re: how to secure bin cage lid?
I agree that it's always better to be safe than sorry and prevent your hamster escaping before it happens.
Do you have a photo of your bin cage as it is now? We might be able to come up with a few more ideas if we've got an idea on how it's been meshed as storage bins can vary so much.
