Default Digging material?

When i get my hamster i'm going attach the cage to an old fish tank i have. My question is what should i use in the tank as digging material? Would the normal shavings do or should i use somthing else?
Thanks in advance for any advice given .

Hi Lellibo,

Hamsters do love to dig, so in any cage that you get it should have a deep layer of substrate for them. There are several different types of substrate such as normal wood shavings or very fine shavings, carefresh, Aubiose, Bed Excel, Cat Litter etc. - but which one you use usually depends on individual preference, and it also depends on what kind of hamster you have. Long Haired hamsters sometimes have problems with shavings and others getting tangled in their fur, especially with males, so some people tend to use something different which is less likely to tangle in the fur - i use Bed Excel for my LH Male Syrians - it is cardboard cut up into small square pieces and it works really well

Most hamsters will also enjoy having a box of Chinchilla Sand in their cages too as they can dig in this and it also keeps their fur nice and clean - but some hamsters will use it as a potty, so you do need to be careful that it doesnt get dirty!

What kind of hamster are you getting? What kind of cage will he or she be living in? How big is the fish tank that you have?

Sorry for so many questions, but you need to get the right cage for the type of hamster you are going to get How would you attatch the cage to the fish tank? The tubes from the crittertrail / habitrail / rotastak kind of cages are not really suitable for dwarfs with furry feet as they can sometimes have difficulty climbing them. They are not really suitable for syrian hamsters either, especially syrian hamsters who have been bred by breeders who breed to show their hamsters - as these hmsters usually get very big and are usually too big to fit through the tubes!!

Depending on how big the fish tank is, it may make a perfect home for your hamster on it's own, but obviously it would have to be big enough

Sorry for the long post

I was thinking of getting a female chinese hamster. The cage will be a Crittertrail dazzle which was why i was gonna link it to my fish tank that is 11.5"-6.5"-13" with stepped tubing. Also i was going to put the cage next to the tank and have the tubes going through a hole in the new lid i'm getting my partner to make for the tank. Then i was maybe going to put a small shelf in the fish tank with steps down onto the digging stuff if that makes any sense.
This isn't final though i'm waiting for the cage to arrive and then im gonna see what i can do with it.

Hiya,

Is this the cage:

http://www.seapets.co.uk/products/pet-s ... -cage.html ??

i have never kept chinese hamsters so i do not know how they would get on in a cage like this, but i do have first hand experience of this cage as someone gave me this cage to see if i could make use of it for any of my hamsters - they hated the cage once they had bought it as it just wasnt suitable for a hamster to live in!

The cage is too small for any hamster and the wheel is unsafe as it wobbles quite a bit and comes apart too easily! The whole cage is very unsafe and very easy for hamster to escape from as it doesnt seem to fit together properly at all - the pieces come apart too easy and cane be dangerous if the hamster happens to get it's foot or paw caught in any of the gaps.

To be honest, for the money you will pay for that cage there are many other cages which are much more suitable and worth the monety - they will probably last for longer too!

I think the best thing to do would be to either cancel the order or return the cage and get your money back - and then buy a more suitable cage which will be much better for the hamster
