Nail Filing Methods?
I've noticed that Ambrose's nails are getting pretty long. Does anyone have any recommendations for things I can put in his cage to file them down?
I live in Japan and ordering stuff online is expensive, so things that are either every day items or can be easily crafted are very much preferred. Thanks!

Re: Nail Filing Methods?
Stones, reptile resin items without sharp edges, and bathing sand can all work to help keep nails trimmed.Things like sandpaper are not safe though since they're incredibly rough and if used for significant amounts of time can cause severe injury to the feet.

Re: Nail Filing Methods?
This seems to have been coming up quite a lot lately! Unfortunately with a dwarf ham like Ambrose you may have to clip the nails yourself or get a vet to do it for you at some point, their nails do grow quite long & fast & none of the things to put in the cage that I often see suggested like stones & resin etc really work.
It is worth having a sand bath in the cage if you don't already as that can help a little, I do use unglazed terracotta flower pots in my cages which if just lay in the cage with a little substrate in & hide food or treats which they enjoy digging around for. Even though these things might help a bit it's doubtful that you'll be able to avoid clipping at some point.

Hmm, I hope I don't have to trim them. He's not wild about human contact. He'd probably get hurt.
He kicked all the sand out of his bath. I'll refill it and see if that helps.

Re: Nail Filing Methods?
Kicking the sand out if half the fun
Try using something like a glass jar laid on it's side, it helps to angle it down at the bottom in the substrate a bit, so he can kick, dig & roll in the sand without constantly emptying the whole thing.

Re: Nail Filing Methods?
Glass jars or glass fish bowls(not suitable for actual fish though but wonderful for small pets to use as digging toys)as digging toys for sand or other substrate are great.

Re: Nail Filing Methods?
Oh I have a bunch of glass jars. I'll use one as a sand bath.

Re: Nail Filing Methods?
Put a glass jar sand bath in his cage. He immediately went to work methodically removing all the sand. :P I can only hope his nails got filed in the process.

Re: Nail Filing Methods?
The cheapest method of doing this is by grabbing some small stones (beware of sharp edges!) from your garden, sterilise them with hot (not boiling!) water, and place a few in your cage!

Re: Nail Filing Methods?
I tried to take some pics of Ambrose freeing the jar from half of its sand. He looks nice and soft now that he's rolled in it.
Taking a celery break from his methodical destruction.
When I woke up this morning he was sitting inside the jar. :3
