Re: Nail Filing Methods?
lol! He does enjoy his sand doesn't he, hours of fun
Looks like he likes his jar too, a glass jar full of sand is a good place for them to chill out when the weather gets warm too.
If you do have a problem with all the sand ending up spread all over the cage, not that it matters but you do get through a lot of sand that way, another thing you can do if you have space is get a reasonably deep cardboard box or plastic tub, maybe half fill it or slightly more so the sand is deep enough but won't all come flying out too much then use bendy bridges so he can climb in & out easily.

Re: Nail Filing Methods?
Yeah, he used to use his other sand bath regularly but I think he got frustrated with it since it was blocking the tunnel system he was trying to build. I rearranged his cage a little the same day I put the jar in which gave him more space to tunnel and he seems really happy. The cage looks like it's about twice as full of substrate as it actually is because he has so many tunnels under there. :P
I'm glad to hear that it will help keep him cool, too! I'm always concerned he'll get overheated...

Re: Nail Filing Methods?
I got one of those horrible wire screen hamster wheels and attached some fine sandpaper. I put it in one of my cages for a while, when my hamsters are active, let them run on it for a bit and remove it the moment they start trying to chew on it or lose interest.
Works like a charm.

I've heard that your hamsters can actually get hurt from those though? Like their paws get scratched up and their nails get filed too far down.

Re: Nail Filing Methods?
Yes,it is true that sandpaper of any grain size can harm hamsters(and other pets too). There are safer options and if all else fails a vet trip is much safer than risking all the potential injuries from sandpaper.

Re: Nail Filing Methods?
Curious that using a strip of sandpaper is the method used in the only hamster wheel to be approved by the American Humane Society...

Re: Nail Filing Methods?
Not everything is guaranteed to be safe.Sometimes things do become unsafe even if regarded as generally safe, like for example aspen shavings because hamsters can become allergic to wood substrate and that itself is extremely common.
I've seen some fairly questionable things from animal welfare organizations and such,so just stick to advice from forums instead as they do tend to know quite a bit more

Re: Nail Filing Methods?
Ambrose was feeling pretty tolerant tonight so I got to hold him (so round! so soft!) and look at his little feet. Looks like his nails are quite a bit shorter than they were before. Yay! Success.
