Default Large Syrian cage reccomendations?

Hi everyone!
I'm looking for a large hamster cage for my Syrian, cookie.
Her current cage is the Pets at Home large wire hamster cage, however, I don't feel like this is a sufficient cage size, being around 40cm in length.
I would like a large cage, preferably with nothing in it, to give my hamster lots of floor space and it will also allow me to set up a theme!

For a Syrian, four Ikea Lack tables would be good! They'd give around a square meter of space and can be purchased cheaply, plus all you need to do is mesh them, create a lid,and make cheap substrate borders from cardboard to have a very minimal DIY cage that is an appropriate size for Syrians. This option would probably end up costing less than a similar sized cage from a pet store, and in fact the largest cages you can buy that are specifically for hamsters are about 100 cm x 50 cm.Anything larger requires modification and costs way more money,so in terms of the cost and space DIY is the best option for a Syrian and Lack tables make it very cheap!

There are DIY options if you're willing to put in the work which will give you more control over how your cage is set out but if you're looking for something ready made then most of the larger cages will be available online rather than in pet shops but you can get some quite good deals. Zooplus is a popular place to look.

Barney: Barney Pet Cage | Great deals at zooplus!

The Alaska: Alaska Hamster Cage | Free P&P on orders £29+ at zooplus!

The Alexander: Great deals on small pet cages at zooplus: Alexander Small Pet Cage

There's also the Hamster Heaven which is available as an online exclusive from Pets at Home but that has tubes and things with it and I'm not sure how well the cage adapts with these taken out. I'd imagine that the accessories in the other cages will be removable so you'll be able to put what you want in.

Bethyboo,
Hi, I use an Alaska cage from Zooplus (well priced too) for our Syrian Pip, these seem popular and are a very good size approx 850mmx500mm she likes it, she was housed in a P@H extra large cage and the difference is huge.
Other owners use the Barney cage which is bigger still

Fluffagrams has linked some popular cages. There are also tank style cages like the zoo zone 2, duna muli (check the size as there are various sizes).

You don't have to have a meter squared cage. Not many people have cages that big.Your hamster may or may not like a cage that big. You need to have a cage that suits your hamsters needs.

Fluffagrams has linked the three most popular cages suitable for a Syrian (and the prices are quite good too). I have the Barney cage The Barney and Alexander both have narrow 7mm bar spacing so can be pretty futureproof as well, in case you ever have dwarf hamsters. The Alexander costs a bit more than the Barney but it comes with shelves and houses and just needs a wheel and a few toys really. The Barney also comes with a shelf and a good sized house for a Syrian.

Another option that offers lots of floorspace and doesn't cost the earth would be the Ikea Detolf
You just don't add the shelves or door, however, you would need to make a lid. It's 163x43cm and with it effectively being a glass tank you could easily do a themed setup if you wanted to

I forgot about the detolf A great option if you have wall space and is one of the easier diy options - just a lid to make.

I personally have the Alaska and find it too small for my Syrian Milo and plan to upgrade it to a DIY cage that's going to be either 1,50 x 50 cm or 200 x 60 cm, not sure yet.

My personal minimum for hamster cages (established before I visited German forums and learned a lot there) is 100 x 50 cm. The Barney cage and Alexander cage from Zooplus are that size and are pretty great as far as I know. If you don't want a typical hamster cage you could DIY something (Ikea Lack, Ikea Detolf, Ikea Kallax, just Ikea in general. :P) or find an aquarium that's huge.

Ikea Detolf's can be doubled up by the way to make a massive tank but not really a tank It would be more expensive and bulky than the Lack square meter idea, but if you're really picky in terms of the look of the cage it might be a better option.
