Question Chinchilla Sand Instructions

A friend of mine keeps Robos and we were discussing sand baths and she mentioned that she only leaves the sand in for about 15 minutes of the day. I told her that I leave Alfie's in permanently and she told me that on the back of the carton it says this:

Is this right? I've read on here that leaving it in all day is fine but now I'm unsure!

I leave Sweep's in all the time - and I'm pretty sure he has more than 2.5cm at a time too!

When I first bought my sand it said the same caution on the box and I was afraid to leave it in their cages all the time. They are absolutely fine with the sand in their cages. I've been using for quite awhile now and nobody has dry skin

Yeah, Alfie has a good heap of it too as he loves digging in it! I'd hate to take it out but I don't want it to irritate him at the same time

I'd just ignore it
It's very rare for any ham to get dry skin from sand & my guess is that as it's so unusual there's probably an underlying problem that causes it, the majority of people here leave it in all the time, I do & they have as much as they like.

Sweep once had an entire section of sand - looked like a massive sand pit! He LOVED it - I didn't as it was hard to clean up LOL

Could it potentially be directed more at chinchillas or gerbils than hamsters?
I'd love a massive sand pit, not sure the Hoover would though

It is completely fine to leave sand in the cage at all times.A lot of companies might just say things like that to protect themselves from being liable for any skin problems resulting from usage, but of course the skin problems aren't really common anyways.

In terms of depth,it can be much more than 2.5 cm!However, you don't want to go too deep as sand can be dusty and if they try to burrow in it it could cause respiratory issues.About 6.5 would be fine, but really it's more about making sure the amount can't be burrowed in and isn't releasing a lot of dust into the cage.

I don't usually give mine sand in their cages unless it's particularly hot and they'll normally get them at playtime however I can't see any real reason not to put it in your hamster's cage all the time other than if your hamster has pre-existing skin or respiratory issues.
