Default Advice please - is my wheel big enough

Hi everyone,

I have a 9 week old Syrian. I'm wondering if his 8 inch wheel is big enough - at least for the next few months. I've included a pic. Would be grateful for people's thoughts!

Should be ok for the moment but as soon as his back starts to arch you know you will need to upgrade to an 11/12 inch wheel .

The current wheel you are using is fine for the next few weeks but I wouldn't wait until her back arches, I would upgrade the wheel to 12" once you notice your hammie growing. I also know this sounds really picky but when you upgrade the wheel go to a plastic one as wooden wheels may be chewed on and splinter and some hammies use it as a toilet so it may get smelly and quite disgusting but remember when upgrading get a wheel with a solid base please

He will soon out grow the wheel, if you have a nice big cage you can consider a "spinner" instead of a large wheel..

I have always found that "Flying Saucers" are good as my Robo loved hers but I have never had a Syrian so I don't know if they would like it and you would still need to get the 12" size which can be costly or go onto ErinsAnimals YouTube and go to the DIY flying saucer wheel

If you did choose another wood wheel, make sure to plastikote it and keep an eye out for splinters.

I would go for a bigger wheel now. Although she can run ok in the 8" now, they run much better in a bigger wheel anyway. The 11" (28cm) Trixie wheel is popular and one of the cheapest. If you like the Karlie wood wheel you have now then get the 29cm one. I had the 29cm one for a while and really liked it. Unfortunately ours broke and I got fed up waiting for replacements when one arrived damaged, so got something else.

As the others say, if you get the 29cm wood wheel, it might need some light sanding and then painting with plastikote. There have been some issues with splinters. That's not as bad as it sounds (sanding). I'd never done it before and it only took 10 minutes. I bought some sheets of sandpaper at the local hardware store and found the 240 grade and the 100 grade were the ones to use. One is rough and sands the struts to get rid of splinters (and any other splintery parts). The other one is very fine and finishes it off nice and smooth The plastikote also helps seal it as well as waterproof it.

They are lovely wheels and quite and our Syrian really enjoyed running in his 29cm one then jumping out and flopping on a big pile of substrate. He also loves his current wheel as it spins so well.

I wouldn't use a flying saucer as a main wheel for a Syrian - they don't always run straight on them - it can be nice as an extra toy in a cage if you have a standard wheel as well, but they need to be 12" for a Syrian and take up a lot of space.

Don't forget the Silent Runner wheel from exoticnutition.com
If you order one get the 12 in (orange wheel)

They have a promo code (GIFT 10) to get 10% off total order

I have 2 of the 9in wheels for dwarves and they are a very nice wheels
You can get a cage attachment assembly is you want to attach the wheel to the cage
