I use Megazorb and Safe Bed it really combines well and makes huge snuggly nests. I use a mix of various substrates for the dwarf hamsters who like to dig. Wooden cat pellets in the corners, paper based cat litter and spruce shavings mix in the middle, shredded brown paper bags and bits of recycled board with a good handful of meadow grass on top for good measure.
except when we take a couple to Dave's mum, there they get carefresh and this fluffy bedding... I was totally against it but it's made from vegetable fibres... and I didn't know how to argue against it then

I would not go with the fluffly bedding in any shape or form. The vegetable fibres are not very digestable and could still impact in the gut. They can also tangle tightly round little toes and legs.
Absolutely cotton is often referred to as vegetable fibre but I would NEVER put cotton wool near any of my hamsters. nooboo next time politely say that they prefer toilet tissue and use the fluffy bedding for packaging material...
