Red face Re: Syrian Bar biting

Usually hamsters bite their bars out of boredom, or if they want to tell you something (e.g. Wheel is too small), but if you feel like you have a sufficient amount of toys, and nothing can be wrong with your hamster, you could try getting a bar chewing spray (available at most pet stores) which tastes nasty to hamsters, and will prevent bar chewing. Another option is to purchase a cage without bars. Pets at Home (UK pet store) has a selection of plastic cages, with barring on the top of the cage for easy access. Another tip is to ensure that your hamster's cage is equipped with plenty of wooden toys for them to chew on! Good luck!

Lol! Maybe he just wanted to have a sniff of you. That sounds promising. Although 10 or 20 minutes is still enough to start driving you mad. Maybe start giving him some out of cage time if you can - in a playpen area or in the bathtub where he can't escape (assume he isn't tame yet). But best to do that at a time when he isn't chewing the bars (maybe the same time of day each time) - so he doesn't start thinking you'll let him out if he chews the bars.

If she was tame at the breeders it will be a big change of environment for her. It usually takes them a couple of weeks to settle in. If it's any consolation, our hammy also chewed at the few small bars in his horrible little rotostak unit we had, at first, but he hasn't been a bar chewer since - apart from the couple of weeks after he was moved somewhere else when we were on holiday.

You can get the chill and chew mats at Viovet and Amazon. I have a hyacinth tunnel that is made of the same stuff and our hammy likes to chew on that too

Hyacinth tunnel - the small size is large enough for even a big Syrian like ours and he likes going in and out of the holes as well It's an add-on item with Amazon but if you look on "other sellers" you don't have to do that.

The Hyacinth tunnel is also sold on VioVet along with the slightly smaller Seagrass one suited to small-average sized Syrians - or dwarfs lol!

I have had exactly the same issue (I even have the same cage and wheel as you!!!) and have just splashed out on a ferplast duna maxi cage. I had tried everything, but nothing really worked so a new cage was the only option I think. Might be something you need to consider too!

It looks like a nice set up - although I would suggest putting a lot more substrate in - so it is a centimetre or two below the edge of the cage base and maybe pile it up in the middle a bit. Although that takes up a fair bit of substrate, it doesn't use any more in the long run because the bottom half stays dry usually (especially if they use a potty). I use Erin's cage cleaning method which works really well for our hammy who got very stressed by cage cleans and it means you basically recycle about 2/3 of the substrate each time.

Aside from that I would suggest maybe adjust the long ladders slightly - he might feel a bit insecure up there on them. The one on the right - if you lower the front end down to the house level it would help. I actually think those long ladders are best just used as ladders - to get from one place to another, rather than hanging toys. I had one and our hammy didn't like it - it made him nervous because it moved!

But mainly I'd suggest putting a lot more substrate in And maybe scatter feeding half his usual food amount (put the other half in the bowl as usual. They like moving substrate around and he might even dig some tunnels, but they also like it for burying food in and piling up into mountains
