Default Opinions on this cage?

My cousin is adopting a new robo hamster in a few weeks and she is stuck between two cages the zoozone 2 or this cage off ebay - XXL Wooden Cage Villa Hamster Mouse Ferret Pet Small Animal Factory seconds | eBay

We need opinions asap as she has to order it in the next few days both cages look good and are about the same size. Thank you

This wooden cage looks nice and big. But I think it'll need varnishing, otherwise urine and other liquids can ruin the wood and make it smelly.

one other thing you would have to worry about with wooden cages is chewing

Difficult The wood one is lovely - and I prefer it personally - but I'd go with the zoozone. I once emailed the makers of these to see what wood they were made of and they said cedar. Now I know that's not the same as cedar shavings, but I still wouldn't fancy using cedar wood for a hammy. There are some similar ones that are made of pine, but they aren't so big.

Aside from that you'd need to be prepared to do some sanding - it could have splinters especially as it says factory seconds, and then plastikoting inside probably.

This is the one made of pine (fir) - it tells you further down. But it's more expensive and the 115cm width is the maximum width but it's still a great size. Someone else on here has one of these, and when you assemble it you can swap the bottom door with the top panel so you can fill the base with substrate and have a front opening access door I nearly got one of these but wanted to stick with a cage as that was what Charlie was used to - plus I didn't fancy all the painting lol.

Amazon sell it too, slightly cheaper, but not sure about delivery

I think a Robo would be very happy in a Zoozone 2 as long as there was lots of cover, like a platform and lots of tunnels and hidey places and not too exposed from above. The advantage of the wood ones is the shelves I guess, but then the cons would be watching out for fall risks with a little robo. It would need setting up carefully in case they jumped off the top shelf onto something. On the other hand if you swapped the door to the top you could get masses of substrate in their and that would reduce the height a bit, give two shelves and loads of tunneling area.

So if the second wood one wasn't too expensive I'd go for that over a zoozone 2, but not the Tectake one personally.

Depending on where you're getting your Robo from, it might be best to start with a smaller cage than either of those -- younger Robos especially can easily freak out and spend all their time hiding, never coming out to play at all, if they go from a small cage to a giant one!

Personally I prefer the smaller zoozone 1 for Robos A confident one will use all the space in a zoozone 2, but a scared one will feel more secure in the smaller cage.

Out of the two, though, I would go for the zoozone over the wooden one

Not to contradict but Pine or Cedar should not be in a hamsters cage as it causes respiratory problems. So a Pine or Cedar cage is not an option and shouldn't be sold for hamsters, unless there is something I'm unaware of that is? If your robo ever got mites then the whole cage would need to be replaced. I'm sure he wouldn't get mites but something to consider.

There's some useful info on housing for Robo's from this Roborovski breeder The Zoozone sounds like a good option. I guess anything with too much height could be risk for falls so wider and lower is probably better. I guess with a larger zoozone it could be easier to make smaller, if a hamster seems nervy of the space, by having extra enrichment - a third could be sectioned off as a deep digging area for example. So then it would be a smaller unit with a digging area option. I've seen something like that done in detolfs

and you could put a lot more tunnels and platforms in to make it interesting.

Oak Farm Roborovskis

They do say a zoozone 1 style is fine as well, but they also say they can need a lot of space.

Serendipity, that Flickr link is a beautiful set-up, can't get much better at that for a robo

I use a glass tank for one of my robos and it works out well. Nice to see them easily

It's one of those amazing German set ups I just thought you could do something like that end digging area in a large zoozone if it turned out that a hammy needed something smaller and it would add some enrichment.
