I just watched a video by Erin ' s animals on You Tube
She says that solid Pine cages, houses & chews are perfectly safe due to the process of that wood has been treated to take out harmful phenols & acids.

Kiln dry Pine shaving are fine too if not too dusty. But the wood chips go through some kind of heat process that also removes the phenols.

Yes I think untreated kiln dried pine is ok for a cage It's something to do with the amount of exposed surface area on shavings as opposed to a large piece of wood. Painting it with plastikote would help seal it as well. I'm not sure I'd want something made of cedar though.

Oak Farm Roborovskis

They do say a zoozone 1 style is fine as well, but they also say they can need a lot of space.
I like Oak Farm/Tammy's cage size page, as she doesn't recommend overly large cages -- all but one of the ones she mentions by name are the same size as, or smaller than, the zoozone 1

On the pine front, someone pointed out to me recently that the species of pine trees in the US and the species of pine trees in Europe/the UK are different, and that the phenol content is likely higher in the US ones than the European ones, so what is true for US pine cannot be extrapolated to UK pine, as they're just not the same. A bit anecdotal I know, but thought it was worth mentioning

The hamsters are not ready to be re homed yet, there's two of them but they have to be re homed separately since they're opposite genders. She's a breeder but she's decided to retire so she needs to get rid of them they're only currently two weeks old though. She told her that the hamsters are currently in a tank a bit bigger than a detolf so we thought that a bigger cage would be better. Thank you all

I'd get the link from You Tube but I'm too lazy right now lol
But the solid pine gets the same treatment as the kiln dried shaving making all of it safe. But you would need to make sure it's kiln dried on the bag to make sure that it has gone through the process to remove the phenols and acids

So untreated kiln dried shavings if there is such a thing? Think it's just plain pine shavings then they get treated and become the kiln dried.

I'll try to post the link

Maybe she could sell the tank with the hamsters?

I bought one of those lovely looking wooden cages. They are soooooo flimsy. The ply or whatever it is just snaps. I got replacement end pieces as they came broken and it would have cost me too much to post it back, plus it was impossible to repack it safely.

I may use it one day (heavily reinforced) but would go with the zz2 if i was you. I also highly recommend the maxi duna multi. Got mine on amazon for around 52.00.
