Default Is this cage large enough?

Hello guys! I recently got a winter white hamster and I would like to make sure that his cage is big enough! Along with what you see in the picture there is a tube going to the top where there is a small box looking area for him to nest in if he wishes. I also attached a smaller cage with a tube where his wheel and a small "house" is. Do you guys think he needs more space?

You can never give an animal too much space, just not enough. I personally believe a ham should have more space than that but you can also frequently take him out, put him in a hamster ball, or a playpen, etc.

I think you can tell by their behavior if they need more space.

How difficult would it be to add a bin and connect it by that tube?

Can you post a pic of that other area?

Is your hamster happy in that cage? If so, I wouldn't worry about it.

critter trails dont really make the best cages due to the fact that they are on the small side, and rather expensive, but the choice is yours

I would say you're cage is on the small side, one of the problems with that type of cage is you can't really provide a deep enough layer of substrate & probably don't have space for a nice size house, they generally are a lot happier with a larger single space area that modular type cages.
What size wheel do you have in there?
If you could make a simple bin cage you could provide a better set up for your ham.

RCalabraro dwarf hamsters really shouldn't be put into hamster balls, it's too dangerous for them & most really don't like them anyway.

I agree with the other posters. If your ham seems content foraging, digging, wheel running (no repetitive behavior, bar chewing, etc.) Then he's probably ok, but it can never hurt to give him more space. I'm a zealot for bins. Lots of space for little cost.

One continuos area is better than lots of small spaces connected with tubes.

Bar chewing is often a sign of a hamster wanting more space but can also occur if the wheel is not working or too small, the water bottle isn't working etc
