Exclamation Can a hamster live in carry cage for 1 day?

I'm getting my hamster ( adopted) on Monday and my cage will not arrive until Tuesday. Could the hamster live in his carry cage ? It would be about 20hours. If I do not get the hamster on Monday I will not be able to get him at all. Could you please give me some advice please

Or I could keep him in this fish tank :

For the day. It dose a ventaltion in the lid. The cage arrives at 4pm Tuesday.

Thanks X

I'd buy a bin cage and attach a water bottle with Velcro. You don't need a top if it's secure in a room without other pets, like cats and dogs. There are other ways to put in a water bottle like using a water bottle holder that is metal and hangs over the side of the bin too. That's a safe and inexpensive way to house a hamster.

Hi. I don't think either of those options sounds good to be honest. Ideally you have the cage all set up ready for the hamster to go straight into when you get them - and it can take some time getting the cage set up right. Once they're in their new cage it's best to try not to disturb anything for the first couple of weeks to let them settle in and avoid stress, so trying to set it up while your hammy is in it wouldn't be a good start.

Can I ask where you are getting your hammy from? Could you not buy the hamster (ie pay for him) and just say you want to pick him up on Wednesday and let the seller keep him another couple of days?

If there's no other option then a tank would be fine. If you can't attach a water bottle you can give chunks of cucumber or carrot soaked in water although not too much as, depending on where he's from, you don't want to introduce too much veg too soon. You can still velcro a small water bottle onto the inside of a plastic tank so that might be the best solution.

You could always grab an exoterra faunarium from Pets at Home and cable tie a water bottle on it's side on the roof.

As Cinnamon Bear said, a bin cage would be the best idea and wouldn't be in danger of enclosed.

Serendipidity I definitely agree with you on that front, definitely not best to change a hamsters environment whilst they are still settling in.

Could you pay extra for next day delivery?

If you do buy a bin cage temporarily I'd let the hammie stay in the bin undisturbed for a week minimum. Then transfer to a larger cage,

It's a tricky one. Shame they are closing down. I would be tempted to go out and buy another cage and either send the one back that is coming on Tuesday, or buy a cheap cage for now, and transfer your hammy to the new one in a couple of week's time, putting the base of the smaller cage inside the new bigger cage.

What time tomorrow do you need to pick the hamster up? You could call in at a petstore on the way maybe. That way the new hammy would only need to be in the pet carrier for an hour or two while you set up the cage. If you can get something like a Hamster Heaven it won't need much setting up - it's more or less ready to go, apart from substrate and you can change the wheel later. I think Pets at Home sell the Hamster Heaven.

Not sure where you've ordered the new one from - if it's Amazon they should pick it up if you want to return it and return postage wouldn't be that much. If it's anyone else it should be a similar return process (unless it's Zooplus). There's a chance it might not get there on Tuesday or arrived damaged too.

I would just go out first thing tomorrow and buy a cage. Which cage did you order?

Just had another thought. If the rescue place is closing down, would they let you have the cage she is in now? Or let you buy it from them at a second hand price?

Would that work okay ?
