Your brothers old cage is too small unfortunately. Which country do you live in? Knowing that may help with suitable cage suggestions.

Okay I definitely won't do that then!! Where could I get a tank from as a temporary home ( don't worry about the cost )

Glass tanks and aquariums are usually only sold for fish or reptiles. I don't know what kind of shop would sell them. Pets at home do sell aquariums. Are you thinking of getting it instead of the detolf and sending the detolf back? If so, then you'd need a 3 foot or 4 foot tank.

An exo terra glass terrarium would probably be cheaper than an aquarium. Pets at home sell the 90cm x 45 cm x 30cm tall one online - I don't know if they keep them in stock. It's this one. It makes a good hamster tank actually - it already has a mesh lid and has lockable front opening doors.

What part of the country do you live in? Clearseal tanks are about the cheapest - I can check if there's a stockist near you.

I think I'll carry on and get the detolf and keep my new hamster in her pets at home cage for a few weeks. I think that's my best option. Thanks for all of your help I really appreciate it! X

I think really, because of the timescale and you getting the hamster tomorrow, it would be better to get the pets at home perspex cage and then think about whether to keep the detolf or return it and get a tank. And just get your hammy in a cage quickly and easily, and settled in straight away when you bring him home. You can pick up any food and bedding you need when you get the cage and plain white toilet paper is best for nesting material. It comes with a water bottle and food dish.

We posted at the same time there! I think that's probably best. It's not a bad starter cage for a new hammy who has had a change of environment.

Looking forward to meeting your new Robo! This article has some good tips on picking up and bringing home your hammy to avoid stress. They can be very scared so once your hammy is in the cage with the bedding etc it's best to leave them to themselves for 2 or 3 days to adjust to their environment and avoid trying to tame or handle him - just put food and water out and let him build a nest and scent mark the cage.

After that avoid cleaning anything or changing anything in the cage for the first 2 or 3 weeks. After a few days you can spot clean the wee area by just taking a handful of wet substrate out and mixing in a new handful - it doesn't matter if you miss a bit - they need a bit of their scent leaving behind

Just to add, once/if you do upgrade to the detolf, your robo might not act the same at first. I just upgraded mine to just a little bit bigger cage and it took her about 3 weeks to start running around again.
