Re: New home for new robos
Hello RCalabraro. I love the round wooden pieces on the wooden shelf. Different and very nice.
Personally, although levels can be problemmatic for dwarfie pairs they seem to be happy enough. The issue about tunnels is that they can come face to face and start to squabble. But if they are getting along, just keep an eye on them. Even hammy pairs in a flat space with no levels or tunnels can fall out. So, pay attention to any chasing, squeaking, or bullying. If it does start, separate them. After my pair did well as long as they lived, I was kind of relieved they never hurt each other. And the stress of wondering if they would have a problem made me only have one dwarfie in a setup at a time from then on.
As for the reptile sand, we had one member use the colored sand with no harm. So, I don't think it is harmful to hamsters in the same way as it is with some reptiles.

Re: New home for new robos
It doesn't seem worth the risk to me to use reptile sand, since it generally costs around 10 dollars or more for good sand and that's not considering the massive vet bills if something does go wrong from that or even death potentially.
Play sand costs half the price if not less than reptile sand, and is much safer and risk free and easier to obtain than chinchilla sand if that's a problem since I know the chain pet stores don't really carry chinchilla sand in the US(except one).

Re: New home for new robos
I have no problem at all getting Chinchilla sand in New York. Amazon has it. Some people like the colors of the reptile sand and don't mind the cost.

Re: New home for new robos
Amazon does sell it,so do some online pet stores though chain pet stores you can shop in person at do not(except Petsupermarket) It's mostly the risk of blockages and respiratory problems that I worry about as well as the sources of such unnatural colors.

Re: New home for new robos
In addition to the above comments, the color of the sand is not natural so it has been dyed. If the sand gets wet that dye could color your adorable robos (this has been a complaint by many reptile owners). Safer to take it out since there is no telling what was used to dye the sand.
While I agree with the trouble the tubes could cause between your robos, I do think the idea of using pool tubes is genius!
Edit - You might look into National Geographic reptile sand (PetSmart sells it). I am currently using it for my dwarfs as it is dye and calcium-free. It is soft and not at all dusty like some of the others, though is pricey @ $12.99 for 10 lbs. We have been using it for a few months and they both have nice, non-oily coats.

Re: New home for new robos
With hamsters the chances of the sand getting wet are incredibly high, and of course the unnatural most likely artificially manufactured dyes are questionable at best.I think there are tons of concerns about it,and even if a minority of people maybe didn't have issues with it I still think it isn't worth the risk.Consider just for a moment how many people have had no issues with cotton nesting material, and then think about how dangerous it is yet if anyone used that we'd all agree they need to remove it yet somehow a dangerous reptile sand is different.

Re: New home for new robos
I took out the reptile sand.
Does anyone think giving 2 robos excessive space might make them less likely to become territorial?
