Default Litter for my WW??

Hi!!
Only 3 days to go until i get my little Hammies

I'm pretty much organised now. I bought a little corner toilet thing for them to do their business in and a friend (who has rats) told me that if i put litter JUST in their, theyre more likely to use it??

I don't know whether thats true or not ? Anyway the main reason for my post is that i dont know what litter to get.
I have bought P@H wood shavings and Kitchen roll that i will tear up for their bedding. Is this ok?

I'm new to this so i've just tried to get most of my information from Hamster Central

Would really appriciate your help

Jess

You do need to use the substrate all over the floor and not just in the potty. Shavings are normally fine for WW and we have used these successfully. In the potty you should put chinchilla sand. It must be sand not dust and I don't think P@H sell the sand so you may need to look around. Ours bathe in it then use it as a loo. They only wee in it and they poop all over the place but it is dry and inoffensive. You may need two potties if you have two WW. Be sure to have two wheels and beds etc and to scatter feed them - no bowls.
Looking forward to meeting them

Well my WW chose a corner behind the wheel to pee in it, used to use it regularly, but now when he has a bigger cage he changes the pee corner all the time

Okay thanks.
Today i bought Bio-Catolet, a 100% paper cat litter as i was told this is ok.
Also, what i'l do is mix the chippings with the litter to put all over the bottom of the cage.
So i need chinchilla sand? and two loos?
i thought i had everything!!

I think that the loo you can buy when you see where they decide to pee (my WW first peed in his house and after that chose the corner...so give them some time) and then place the loos there and just put the peed on shavings in the loo - u can mix it with the cat paper stuff at the beginning i think. The trick is that they can smell where they peed before and continue to pee there.
Chinchilla sand is great for them because they love playing and cleaning themselves in it (and sometimes peeing) so i recommend that anyway But when u have two of them i heard its best to have two of everything so that they wouldnt fight over anything. Good luck

The bio catolet is OK to use with hamsters but I only know of people using it with long hared syrian males when they don't want the coat to tangle. It may be a little lumpy for tiny WW feet. They don't wee an awful lot as they are only tiny. Ours adore their sand baths and really enjoy rolling in them.

Okay. so if i mix the cat litter and the wood shavings and use as bedding.
Then put the peed on bedding in the toilet with the chinchilla stuff to encourage them to go in there?

Or do i need a seperate sand bath?

I suggest you see where they pee and then decide. Maybe you will realise that its just best to replace the bedding that has been peed on (because they often use the same place) every day, or two. Usually they just dont care if you tell them that is the house, and this is the toilet, and they go on and sleep and pee in the wheel! So just wait and see

Yes I'd use the mix on the floor and use ripped up kitchen roll or white loo roll for nesting in.
As they enjoy the sand for bathing in and it makes their fur nice I'd just fill with sand and see what happens. If you can fit in two then have two.
