Default Zoozone 2 For a Robo hamster?

Misty my Robo hamster is currently living in a bin cage but I really want to get her a Zoozone 2. Is It a good cage for a robo hamster? Her current bin cage doesn't have a lid because she has no really large toys because she prefers tunnels but would I have to mesh the top of the cage for her? I've heard that it's a really good cage but most people I've seen with them have Syrian hamsters so I'm unsure on if it would be suitable for her.

Hi. Having kept a few single robos myself, I would say the Zoozone 1 would be large enough. You can even use the Ferplast Duna shelf in these cages or even make a shelf with a bendy bridge ramp. I never bother with lids either as the curved line of the clear lids make it okay not to bother with meshing, but obviously if you think you have anything in the cage the robo could and would attempt to climb onto, then do take measures to mesh. Or indeed, if you have other, larger pets in the house like dogs/cats/ferrets etc....

I use a second hand Gabber Rex tank (same size as the ZZ1) and I`ve kept a single Chinese in this, two separate robos and now a Russian dwarf and they all love it. Maybe look for a second hand ZZ1? x

I thought that the Zoo zone 1's were below the minimum cage size? I'll have to look it up. Thank you!

I think a lot depends on the individual robo, some are a bit intimidated by too much space while others will enjoy having all the extra things you can fit into the larger tank & the extra substrate to dig & burrow in.
You don't want too much open space in any cage for a robo but if yours seems fairly confident the go for the zoozone 2, if she's more on the timid side then the zoozone 1 might suit her better even though it is on the small side.

There is no really official minimum cage size* The ZZ1 meets the old minimum the RSPCA used to quote** (which they have since removed from their website and all of their literature), and I think it is a good size for a single Robo.

I disagree about not needing to mesh it though, I had a previous Robo manage to jump out of his unmeshed one even with no tall toys! If you want to not mesh something, the duna multy is about the same size but with narrow bars on the top, like the mini duna.

*unless you use the National Hamster Council's minimum, but that is purposefully small to accommodate things like hospital cages and holiday cages and such, so isn't really a guide for full time hamster living!

**they used to quote 75x40 cm as a suggested size, and the ZZ1's 72x46cm is approximately the same floorspace

The only way to know if a cage is too small is to wait and see if the hamster shows signs of boredom like chewing bars, chewing on the cage in general(in tanks this would be chewing on silicon),throwing their bodies at the sides of the cage and trying to claw or climb out, etc. These are all extremely common behaviors to see but people don't recognize all of them as boredom signs.Just pay attention to your hamster's body language and you'll do fine!

Size depends on your individual hamster. But the bigger the cage, the more cover you'd want in it. If you're looking to get a tank style cage so you have a lid, you'll probably be tempted to put a few taller toys in there so I'd say mesh it it or buy one of the duna multy tanks which have narrower bars. Hector busted for me the idea that robos can't grip or climb when I found him climbing onto his house and monkey baring round the roof of his tank...

I'd go with the Zoozone 2 because you can do more with it - you could section off one end as a digging area possibly, or have larger toys and accessories in there, or have different areas with different levels, or have a large labyrinth house.

A lot of people have used maxi duna multys for robos - and it's virtually the same size and style - except the bar spacing is smaller so it doesn't need meshing.

There is so much you could do with the 100cm Zoozone 2. Some people even keep a robo in a detolf which is much bigger. It's how you set it up and how your hamster's personality is that would help on the set up.

Are you in the Uk? If so the maxi duna multy would be easier as it doesn't need meshing - but it does cost a bit more than the Zoozone 2.

Cage Maxi Duna Multy

Amazon sell it too about £83 but the postage might be cheaper - I'm not sure on that one.

This thread shows the maxi duna multy and the Zoozone 2 next to each other. The maxi duna multy set up is for a dwarf hamster - and has a labyrinth house in that also acts as a platform (flat roof).

Ferplast Maxi Duna Multy

I think with more floorspace you can give them a good house, have space for both a wheel and a flying saucer and plenty of tunnels and tubes, plus a digging area as well maybe.
