This is why I don't go near carefresh anymore, tried it once and that happened so of course I binned it afterwards.

It could happen with any substrate though.Personal preference of course is bound to change things, but others are entitled to their own preference as well.

I have never had any problems with shavings and tissue paper, I just know carefresh is not the one for me maybe with her being a smaller hamster it probably was not a good idea.

Probably Some people have problems with shavings too though,so it does depend on individual circumstance and individual hams.

I am not knocking carefresh at all, it's just I thought I would share my experience to warn others. The weird thing is I thought shavings would be okay for her, I should have just stuck to the shavings and paper and she may have had a longer and happier life.

Re: Carefresh COLORS
Have you seen Fitch substrate Abi? It's a Uk one that quite a few people use. It's recycled food grade paper - I switched to it from shavings - I wasn't sure at first but am really happy with it - mainly because our Hamster loves it! It's quite soft and I find it dust-free which a lot of substrates aren't. Carefresh isn't actually paper, it's cellulose - the Fitch is just paper substrate. I still use torn up white toilet paper for nesting material and our hammy uses that to build his nest but he likes to take some of the Fitch substrate in for his nest as well and has built a huge nest lol!
I get the 10kg bag which lasts me about 6 months (doing Erin's cage cleaning method). Just think it's something that could be shared with your Sister maybe. You buy it online either direct from the manufacturer, or from Amazon (where it costs a pound or two more). I think if you live nearby the manufacturer you can just pick it up and get it even cheaper.

Re: Carefresh COLORS
I was actually wondering where I could get Fitch from, do you know if they will sell it in any pets shops? I have a pets corner nearby, if that is not the case I think I will be ok with local delivery as my postcode is GU. Peanut's cage is already starting to smell a bit and I cannot seem to find her toilet corner but I am suspecting it may be near or in her nest but I don't want to disturb it by doing a spot clean.

Re: Carefresh COLORS
This is their address if it's anywhere near you
Fitch Recycling Solutions, Unit 11, Whitelands Business Park, Clarence Street, Stalybridge, Cheshire, SK15 1QL
If not I think it is just online - unless one of your local pet shops is happy to order it in for you. The 20kg bag works out the cheapest but I don't have room for that as it's huge! The 10kg bag isn't so bad - you can squish it into different shapes and sizes to fit in or under things! ie low and wide or tall and thin. At one point I had it tall and thin and squished between a wardrobe and a chair. Now I have it in the corner of the bedroom with a throw over it - so it looks like a small beanbag chair I think it's best to keep it indoors so it doesn't get damp and mouldy.
If she's peeing in her nest I guess you might need to spot clean it a bit. How long is it now since you got her? Ideally it'd be best to wait a bit longer.

Re: Carefresh COLORS
You could also have a smaller bin or more than one bin to keep any substrate in to take up less space than one giant bag of it all!Height instead of width etc, kind of a good idea in my mind.

I have had her since Tuesday, and I think they will deliever for free Cheshire is like an hour or two away from me. I don't think storage will be a problem either, I have a wardrobe/closet (I don't know to explain it) and I keep my things in there. At the minute I am using wood shavings and food from wilko and I feed her some rosewood insects (the critter cocktail) and I am not sure if she likes them or not.
