Re: Carefresh COLORS
Not tried the Carefresh ultra. I have a local hardware store that sells Carefresh naturals for a good price so I get that or wood shavings. The colours I've treated myself to when I've had a discount voucher for p@h with my loyalty card - I fairly often get a £3 off when you spend £30 One. So I wait until I'm due to get cat food and litter and add it on to that shopping trip then the Carefresh works out half price, I think.

Re: Carefresh COLORS
I just felt like I needed to say this, I had a chinese hamster about 4 years ago and her name was cookie I heard alot of things about carefresh (good things) and I bought it. However, a week after changing her bedding to carefresh she had passed away because she had got it stuck in her cheek pouches. So based on my experience I will not even go near the stuff anymore.

If Sweep is having a cage change you probably won't need much extra substrate at first if you move all his old substrate across to his new cage (which is probably a good idea to help reduce the stress of the change), but you could always mix a bit in and gradually add some, which is probably what you meant. Some people have one area of the coloured Carefresh and the rest different.

Yeah when he moves to his new cage I'll transfer the current substrate. May have to also add a little depeding on how much there is as obviously the base of this one is smaller than the Alexander! But I'm thinking more for a month or two time when I want to do something Summery ... But may as well buy it now as I'm buying the normal one and some other bits now too

Re: Carefresh COLORS
I've always used Carefresh Ultra from P@H and I've never had any problems with it, it doesn't seem dusty to me and Willow is fine on it. I haven't had any experience with colours so I would not know

Re: Carefresh COLORS
I think both cage bases are about the same size but substrate does flatten so you'll probably have room for a bit more. It's just it would be better to put the new on the bottom and his old substrate on top, so was thinking you wouldn't get to see the colours if using it straight away But you could just have a new corner with some of the Colours in and keep the rest of the base the same I guess. But probably best to just resist making it nice and colourful for a month until he's settled in.

So sorry to hear this - it is an awful thing to happen. I have not heard of an issue like this with Carefresh before. There was a patch where people were concerned about baking soda in it causing death to hammies, but someone from Carefresh posted on here last year to confirm there was no baking soda in Uk Carefresh and they had stopped putting it in the US version. I prefer Fitch anyway - it works out much cheaper, less dusty and is just paper so dissolves if it gets wet.

Re: Carefresh COLORS
I've been resisting the urge to post this for a while, but it has to be said.Any substrate can be dangerous if large amounts(large enough to get stuck or choked on)are ingested or pouched.
