Re: Fir substrate?
It's a nice story! Fingers crossed for you (and will you get discount lol?!) I think with a detolf it would be good to have a substrate you could buy in bulk - it would work out cheaper - but you never need to replace it all at once, so it can last a while if you use a potty and spot clean.
Erin's Hamsters cage cleaning tips video is good and explains this - it really helped me with cage cleans for our nervous Syrian and saves loads of substrate as well.
Actually I might have linked it in your other thread too - if so, sorry about that

Re: Fir substrate?
Thanks!
(I hope I'll get a discount, but idk for sure. :P Worth it either way to have puppy care be my job.)
That video is super helpful, btw. I'm hoping to give my hamster fairly deep substrate, and since the cage will be big I should be able to use the 1/3 (European) cleaning method effectively.

Re: Fir substrate?
Good news!!
I found a pet shop that sells aspen substrate.
It's 2kg for ¥1,540 which is $14 or 9.84 British pounds. Is that expensive? It doesn't seem like that much substrate. Maybe I should go for paper substrate anyway if it's cheaper.

It's probably the best deal you'll get from a pet shop,to be honest. If you can find a feed store it might be cheaper, but it's not a horrible price either

Re: Fir substrate?
Okay, that's good. I wonder if I can find a feed shop...you wouldn't think it'd be possible since I live just outside of Tokyo, but I know for a fact there are horses near my house so maybe...:P At any rate, I can't buy more than maybe 3kg at a time anyway because I don't have a car so whatever I buy gets carried home with me by foot, bike, or train.
An update about the pet shop job I mentioned earlier, I did the interview and they were supposed to call me today but since it's 7pm and they haven't yet I'm guessing I didn't get the job. :P I didn't think I would since a lot of people applied and I don't have any relevant skills or experience, but I'm still sad because it seemed so fun. But they did sell cotton bedding there so at least I won't be forced to sell dangerous stuff to hamster owners.

Might be best to just go with the 2kg then! It's not a bad deal plus the feed store sizes would probably be a lot larger. And with your limitations, that's not a very good idea!
