Smile New hammy sleeping in pipes

Hello!

We have just come home with our new hammy, Poppy! She didn't have pipes in the cage she was in at the shop but she has gone into a pipe and is sleeping there.

The lady at Pets at Home said to not disturb her for the first 24 hours or so but I'm worried about her choice of sleeping location...

...should I be worried or will she discover her nesting area later when she is more awake?

Thanks!

If possible remove the tubes, they will often hide away & sleep, eat, hoard food & pee in tubes when they are new, common problem!
If you can better do it sooner rather than later so she can just get over it & make a nice nest else where, give her loads of shredded toilet tissue & she'll soon settle, those tubes can get condensation build up quickly & really aren't healthy.

Congratulations on Poppy! You should leave your hamster alone for a full week is recommended. No problem if hammy sleeps in pipes/tubes, she will soon make a nest for herself as she explores her cage. I'm not sure what pipes are? Do you mean plastic tubes or cardboard tubes?

I agree with Cypher on the tubes too

CB not in this case, in general it's best to leave a ham to settle for a couple of days & only talk to it quietly as it begins to settle before attempting any interaction of any kind (the amount of time varies from one ham to another) but not when something like the plastic tubes is a potential health hazard, if something like this needs to be changed it's best done straight away so the ham can then begin to settle in properly rather than waiting.

Ahh yes, tubes! Sorry guys and thank you for your responses. I will remove them now whilst she is still new to the house. She has plenty of warm bedding in her hide out, and plenty of tissue with my scent on

I think generally it's recommended to leave them alone for 2 or 3 days to settle into a new cage, but in this case, as Cypher says, it might be better to remove the tubes so she makes a nest somewhere else and gets settled - rather than having to remove her nest when she has blocked up the tubes with nesting material!

Lots of tissue with your scent on sounds good Which cage is it? The Hamster Heaven?

I'm sure she'll do much better like that, sounds like she has everything she needs for a nice nest without those tubes
