Would this work?
Hey guys,
(I hope this is the right section)
I was looking at indoor rabbit hutches for my bun the other day and had an idea; I could modify a double/stacked hutch to house my bun at the bottom and my hamster (syrian) at the top.
I would be able to match it to my furniture this way and get rid of the big ugly dog cage my bun is currently in, and also get rid of my ham's ugly bin cage.
Would staining it with something non toxic, maybe adjusting it so I could put deep bedding in and putting some smaller mesh over the existing mesh work?
Is it a bad idea?
Opinions please!!
Thank you

Re: Would this work?
I'm thinking they would be too close to each other - and smelling each other so close could be stressful. Also a bit close if one escaped into the other's cage.

Re: Would this work?
They both get along extremely well if they come close. No biting.
Their cages are stacked at the moment and have been since around January. I can't really keep my hamster anywhere else as the only other space is close to my rats upstairs which would be much worse.

Re: Would this work?
Sounds like it could work. I kept my last hamster in a rabbit hutch. Just a word of caution there are no hutches big enough to shut a rabbit in. They need a minimum of 10 foot x 6 foot to live in with 24/7 access to a run.
Puppy panels make a great indoor run,, make sure they are tall enough as its amazing how high rabbits can jump!
Apologies is you already know this stuff.

Re: Would this work?
I thought rabbits needed a minimum of 5ft in length?
Personally I don't think it's a good idea. You could buy a single story hutch for your rabbit, and then buy a vivarium for the hamster and customise it to suit your hamsters needs, for example, it will need more ventilation put in. You could stack them that way.

I think its a very bad idea. Good for the hamster not for the bunny. There is no way just the bottom of the hutch would be big enough. Do you let your bunny have free run of the house or a room for 12 hours a day? If so then a hutch just for sleeping/toilet/safe place would be fine, as long as it is left open. Otherwise try making a C&C cage for you bunny. I know this sounds harsh, but space seems to be an issue for you, perhaps you should think about re-homing your bunny..

A 6ft hutch will cost a lot of money. If you're keeping your bunny in your house why not just keep him/her as a house rabbit? All you will need is a sleeping area, feeding area and potty/litter tray for him/her. Just like keeping a cat really.

Re: Would this work?
Oh did i say 10 foot oops i meant an over all space of 6 foot buy ten foot.
Indoor rabbits can just have litter trays and a hiding place in a room. When i had mine inside they loved sitting under a set of wooden shelves.

Thank you for your input, guys, but you have jumped to conclusions.
There are many different opinions on "minimums". He has a XXL dog cage w/ second level overnight. He is allowed to roam my bedroom & hallway during the daytime. In the night, however, my cat insists on sleeping on my bed which is why he stays in his cage. He has a 12ft run outside in the warmer months.
Edit----
I do like the vivarium idea. Thank you
