Re: NHC guidelines
My email went through, it was not unpolite; if it was I doubt that they would read it.

Re: NHC guidelines
I tried to see if the site might not have been updated to the latest cage sizes, but didn't see anything that would suggest that.

Re: NHC guidelines
I have just had another look to see if anything has changed - not yet. Maybe it's a bit much to expect something over night though XD

Anyone had a reply or at least a sign of response yet?

Re: NHC guidelines
The NHC Secretary has other commitments this weekend and I'm sure she'll reply when she can. Any alterations to the NHC Handbook would have to put to the whole council, discussed and likely sent as a proposal to the AGM (as described in the last journal). It's not just a matter of changing a webpage!

Re: NHC guidelines
Has anybody had anything yet? I haven't, do you think that they've actually read the emails? I hope so, couldn't stand the thought of well meaning owners putting their hamster in such a tiny cage.

Re: NHC guidelines
I received this email in reply;
Our minimum cage sizes are just that - a minimum - they are not a recommendation. As a Governing Body we are aiming to make sure that everyone we influence is keeping hamsters in a way that does not compromise their BASIC welfare. Many humans would prefer to live in a large country house, but that doesn't mean that they are not perfectly healthy in a small town flat; it's the difference between want and need.
Obviously we would prefer people to keep their hamsters in larger cages than our minimum sizes, and use the space to supply extra enrichment. However, when supplying information our concern is to advise on what the hamster's minimum basic needs are, so that individual keepers can make sure that their hamsters do not suffer from lack of any of the "five needs", (in this case, "a suitable place to live").
Since we hope our "minimum specifications" may be taken seriously enough to be used in secondary legislation for the Animal Welfare Act we need to make sure that what we say has scientific evidence to back it up and is not based solely on what we as individuals feel is right for our own hamsters. We have therefore drawn on the minimum guidelines set by the UFAW, (part of UK Government law), such scientific research as we could find, ("Comfortable Quarters"), and the EU country which had set legal guidelines at the time of we wrote down our Code of Practice. All of this information is attached in a pdf document.
During the discussion in which we codified our guidelines we also drew on the experience of our members, both past and present, many of whom had been keeping and successfully showing and breeding hamsters for decades. Indeed, some of our past members had been keeping hamsters since they, (the hamsters), first came into the UK in the late 30s/ early 40s. Hence collectively the NHC's members' experiences represent many decades of hamster keeping in many different circumstances, (rationing included!), where the hamsters have been healthy, bred well and in many instances won shows.
Should the guidelines be used in law, people could in theory be prosecuted for failing to meet them and this would be unfair unless their hamsters were actually suffering. Hence our somewhat minimalistic guidelines.
Regards
Rosie Ray

Re: NHC guidelines
I didnt think that it is the difference between want and need myself as I feel that hamsters NEED more space than they suggest.
