Default Question about Carefresh

I just wanted to ask this, as I'm now a little concerned ... I bought a huge bag of Carefresh before I got Sweep, and had planned to use it in his cage when I do a full clean out (as he was used to shavings at the petshop he is still on that). Before I transferred it, the plan was to put it in his play box and let him dig in it to get used to it, which he really seemed to enjoy this evening! BUT I am a little concerned about something ... It says on the pack it "expands" and I wondered what exactly does this mean? I am concerned that if Sweep should try to eat it then it will make him very poorly because it will expand in his tummy. It is freaking me out a bit as some of the time he was digging in it he was right underneath it so I don't know if he has eaten any or not ... Please help!!

Not to worry, they don't eat it, company would go out of business!

I've always used Carefresh & it's my favorite, good odor control

It expands so your getting more than what compacted in the bag.

Rub the Carefresh together with your hands to cause it to expand when you put it in his cage, he doesn't have to get used to it

I used carefresh in the past it doesn't expand when wet, so it won't cause any harm to your hamster. As the carefresh is compressed into the bag and once open and you loosen the bedding up it provides you with a larger quantity of bedding as a 6l bag will provide you with 10l of bedding! So I don't think you have anything to worry about! The only problem I had with carefresh is the dust in which I think my hamster became allergic too so have since stop using.

Ok thanks. I didn't find it at all dusty which was nice, and he had such a great time! I think I mostly panicked because I stupidly asked Google "how does Carefresh expand" and it took me to a page where someone had posted about a guinea pig dying after eating Carefresh. Almost everyone told her that it was unlikely the cause of death, but then Google took me to another page about chinchillas, and it said if they eat it they can die ... I know people say you shouldn't believe everything you read online, but this is my little baby and I don't want him getting sick just cos I used Carefresh!! Thanks for reassuring me though Next time I'll just ask before reading Google!

I think that was when the changed their formula to contain baking soda to improve odour control which people reportedly said it was causing death in their pets but I don't know whether that was proven. But since then carefresh changed it formula back after numerous complaints. Your hamster should be fine!

Ok great thanks
This is the one I ordered and received : Carefresh Natural: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies

Is it different to this : Absorption Carefresh Pet Bedding 30 Liters - 118030: Amazon.co.uk: Pet Supplies

Oh, and also been trying to tissue trick with Sweep. However, just want to ask if I need to do it every single day - so add a little more tissue with my smell on every day to his cage? And also, I used plain white tissues, but not toilet tissue. It is unscented ... Will this be ok?? So far he seems to like it. He hasn't yet removed it like he did with the rest of his bedding so I wonder if the paper bedding from Wilko was a little hard for him, or maybe I'll find a pile of tissue in the morning!

That carefresh looks fine also I think natural carefresh is less dusty than the coloured carefresh (that's the one I found really dusty).

I've never done the tissue trick myself so hopefully someone will help you on that!
But I think the tissues your using are fine.
