Default Live Plants?

Hi Guys!
I hopefully am making a huge, new diy cage soon and I want to go full on German/ Natural themed so I was wondering what live plants I could include? I couldn't find any recent posts on it and with new knowledge and everything...
Thank you xx

Cat grass that is sold in pet-stores is safe for hamsters. There is organic, already grown grass at my local pet-shop that I'm going to be picking up for Bernie soon. I'll let you know if he likes it!

I've seen one in a plant/outdoor/hardware store that was sold as a hamster plant, edible and everything, and they look like what I've seen in more natural cages, but I don't know it's official name. Sorry I couldn't be of anymore help.

I think there was another thread on this recently and it was thought that having live plants was a bit of an issue due to the soil or whatever they're planted in possibly being a risk with moulds and so on. I can't remember really. Millet sprays, apple cracker dari and such like can look good stuck in something, and look like growing plants and are also edible.

Cypher knows more about I think.

It is risky having live plants. You can't really monitor the amount they eat. Dandelions are a strong diuretic and can make the hamsters pee too much and upset their kidneys and fluid balance. They should only be given in tiny amounts if at all.

I think you can make a very nice looking natural set up without having live plants - I wouldn't want to risk it. For example the cork log I bought recently has a 'look' of moss growing on it. I put it in the freezer for a couple of days just to make sure there was nothing living on/in it! Some of the set ups with plants look very nice, but I wonder how long the plants actually live, and safety comes first really. A lot of the natural look comes from texture - like the cork, different substrates in different areas and so on. The Germans also often use hay but not many Uk owners do because hay can be spiky and hamsters have sensitive eyes and cheek pouches.

The best thing you can give your hammy is interesting space to explore with tunnels and hides and deep substrate, and feed fresh veg in small amounts.

Lol - I went through all that too wanting plants in the cage, but life is much simpler without them I also tried a bag of flowers, leaves, sort of woodlandy substrate to sprinkle on top of the substrate. It looked lovely but Charlie poked his eye on a dried leaf stalk and I was horrified and took it all out again.
