Housing Hamster near Mice?
Hello all, I just moved my hammie, Bulma, into a 100at bin cage. The problem now is where to put it, because it's quite large I want to put it somewhere I won't have to move it around a lot. My idea was to put it on a shelf with my mouse cages, it would be one level above and out of view of the mice.
My question is whether or not that would be 1) safe for both the mice and the hamster 2) would they be able to smell each other 3) is this just a bad idea altogether?

I don't see where that would be a problem? They may be able to smell each other but they should adjust to the scents around them.

Re: Housing Hamster near Mice?
The chance of anything too bad happening are very slim.I've only heard of one really odd incident where mice ended up killing a Chinese hamster, but that was because the mice managed to somehow sneak into the hamster's cage.If your setup is very secure it should be fine, but I would recommend a bin cage with 1/4th inch mesh just to make sure there is no way for the mice to get in.

Re: Housing Hamster near Mice?
It should be fine, my mice live near my hamsters and its never been a problem. Rusty (syrian) has lived next to a group of mice for a while now and he's never minded in the slightest, the mice ignore him and he's far more interested in Calypso (nearest female syrian) than he is in the mice.

Re: Housing Hamster near Mice?
Thank you for the responses! Both the mice and the hamster are in 100qt bins, I made sure to not put anything high up enough to allow anyone to climb up and find a spot to chew, I picked bins with smooth insides, no plastic sticking out that they could get their mouths around. I think we'll try it stacked for now until we find a shelf to accommodate the sizes of these bins since apparently mine is too small haha
