A baby Syrian will do well in a barney cage and it will last the whole lifetime of the hamster unless the hamster grown really big or the cage breaks.

Syrians grow really quick so getting a big cage first rather than a small and upgrading will save money and the stress of a cage move later on.

Be careful with the layout so there is less chance of injury from falls eg deep bedding, shelves etc.

As CMB says! It's great to start them out in a cage big enough for their whole life. I've just upgraded our Syrian to the 100cm Barney from an 80cm cage and wish I had got the 100cm one to start with, as they get so settled and familiar with a cage. I did find it took a bit of thinking to set it up to be safe from falls as it is is quite tall - not massively tall, but taller than my old cage. It comes with the one shelf which helps and if you have the substrate as deep as possibly this will also help cushion any falls if your hammy decided to climb right to the top and drop! I filled the base with substrate and then heaped it up in the middle! The good thing about the Barney is it has narrow bar spacing, so the substrate doesn't fall out through the bars as I found! It might seem like a lot of substrate but works out economical overall as you only really need to spot clean mostly - the bottom half of the substrate tends to stay dry, so you don't need to do cage cleans so often and can also re-use the bottom half of the substrate. With deep substrate and some hanging toys like a sputnik eg, over the top of any hard floor toys you should be fine and your hammy will love the space in there. The cage comes with a good big house And not too much plastikoting to do. I'd recommend plastikoting the shelf at least, because you can't get replacement shelves - it only took me 10 minutes to do each coat though I painted it with a couple of coats.

Plastikote water based paint - it's pet safe. I get it from Amazon and I'll add the link (although our local diy store has it as well). It needs to be the water based one. It comes in a few colours if you fancy a coloured shelf but I just get the clear one. Some people say the colours are good for checking you haven't missed a bit, but I didn't have a problem with seeing where I'd painted You just paint it on with any paint brush - doesn't smell really and is dry in a couple of hours. It's a small pot but it goes a long way. A couple of coats will add a waterproofing layer to the wood shelf. It's a good idea to protect the things that can't be replaced easily, like the shelf, and painting inside the house could be a good idea as well so it doesn't get pee stained if your hammy pees in his nest occasionally. Our hamster only pees in his potty but I painted the shelf anyway, just in case.

Getty a potty litter tray is a good idea as hammies tend to use them and it really helps with cleaning. I just clean out his potty every four or five days and the rest of the cage stays dry You can use Chinchilla bathing sand in the potty, which is safer than the Hamster potty litter. I have this litter tray. You need to wait and see where they choose their pee corner to be though, and put the litter tray there - they won't move their chosen pee spot if you put the litter tray somewhere else lol.

You can see some of the other plastikote colours if you scroll down this page - if you don't want to get it as an Amazon add-on item, just click on other sellers.

My last bottle came from AP Motor Store (the clear one) and was £4.50 including postage.
