Would it be cruel?
Hi Guys! So some you may know that I was getting a tank for little Percy, the bar chewer. I went to get the tank yesterday, but it was not a tank... It was siliconed to the high heavens, plus cracked and chipped all over the place. If I put Percy in there he would probably in the Vet in a week. So I still took it because the man terrified me. I simply dumped it in his yard this morning. So my dad as agreed to make a DIY cage soon, but until then, to keep Percy from chewing could/should I put him in an 70x40 bin cage? It would be for two
weeks max.
Thank you xx.

70 x 40 cm may not be ideal for syrian, but I think it's not so bad if temporary. For one I know that the minimums can vary over time, over different countries... so don't worry, if he'll have enough toys not to be bored, he'll probably be just fine with this :3

Thank you for your opinion. He will have plenty of toys and substrate. I will increase playtime so to burn some energy. It will be for 2 weeks max.

Re: Would it be cruel?
Okay guys. I set it up and the wheel took up half the cage. I couldn't do it. He spent the 10 mins he was in it trying to escape. It broke my heart

He might be trying to escape because he's unfamiliar with the new environment, even if part of the old bedding is here, bin cage smells different than ordinary cage he lived in

Re: Would it be cruel?
Though if wheel alone is taking such large part of free space it might be better not to keep him in there... may not be enough space for other toys

My Syrian's cage is 75cm x 45cm so not much bigger than your temp cage. He will still be adjusting of you've just put him in, it's a big change for him and it may be smaller than he's used to but he'll be fine for a couple of weeks. Give him plenty of familiar things and he should be fine.

Re: Would it be cruel?
I wouldn't do it - cage changes are a big thing - it would be better to keep him in his current cage until you get the new one built Did none of the other things help with the bar chewing? I seem to remember he only started doing it after a clean and the cage being moved to a different location. Best to keep him settled until the main move. The aquarium sounds like a rip off! I think you should ask your Dad to take it back and get a refund.

Re: Would it be cruel?
Oh, I think I misunderstood. You still have his current cage, it's just that he chews? Oh, in that case, I agree with serendipity. Keep in his current familiar cage until you have the new one built. Try threading cardboard through the bars in a couple of the places he picks in the most but yeah, I'd probably only move him the once.

Re: Would it be cruel?
Yes! The tank was a huge let down! I just dumped it and left as the man was obviously alcoholic and was wearing disgusting clothes. I set back up his old tank and as I was taking his out of the bin for the first time ever he bit me! Full on lunged at my finger and hung on! I was shocked and he did draw blood in two fingers I just left him to cool down for 10 mins and the as I was taking him out again he leapt out of my cupped hands! Scramble to get him and put him back in his cage. I am going to ignore him until Monday ( not actually ignore ) to let him get over it. I gave him extra substrate and a complex, entertaining lay out. I removed level as he never used it and doesn't bar climb anymore! I will post a picture of his layout soon and could you give me ideas? Thanks.
