Default Savic ruffy 2 hamster cage

Hello all! I've not yet got my hamster, I'm going to get all the required kit first, and then adopt one hopefully next week I want to get a good big cage and came across the savic ruffy 2 (the one with the yellow base), is this a good one for syrian hammys? Also, I saw it on cagesworld.co.uk, has anyone bought from their before? Thanks!

I am sure it would be fine size wise but for very similar money you could get the 100 x 50cm barney cage (zooplus) which comes with a great syrian sized wooden house and shelf.

eta the house and shelf (which has a ramp) will all need treating with plasti-kote varnish or cuprinol garden shades paint both of which are pet safe and water based and protect the wood against water spills or wee!

According to one review on cagesworld it only has a top door? Having a big side door is very useful since it makes it easier to interact and swooping in from above can frighten your ham. 80x50cm is a good size, you can get an Alaska which is the same size (with a big side door) for £35 on zooplus.co.uk

I agree the barney is a good option too. It's also on zooplus

Yes! The Savic Ruffy 2 is plenty big enough for a Syrian and a 12 inch wheel fits perfectly. The only downfall of this cage is that it has no large side doors.

It's a nice cage at a good price and has a good deep base, and comes with a rat tube. I would also prefer side doors and not just top doors, and as the others say, Zooplus has some excellent cages for under £50. The Ruffy is probably much better built than the Alaska cage, but then the Alaska is only about £32 and has a big front door which gives good access.

Also I reckon the 100cm Barney is a fairly futureproof cage. I have an 80 x 50 cage and wish I had got a 100 cm one, as once you get the cage contents in there's not that much floorspace. If you were going to spend £50 I'd get the Barney (just under £50), unless you particularly like the Ruffy.

It's here _ you can also see reviews and photos of set ups on this link.

Barney Pet Cage | Great deals at zooplus!

Having said that, I quite like the height of the Ruffy (which is the same height as my Savic cage) of 38cm as it means it's easy to set up without fall risks, especially if you fill the base with deep substrate. On the downside to that, it's not easy to fit a shelf in as not enough space under the shelf to put things. Plus a Syrian sized wheel virtually fills it - which is ok but it ends up taking up a big chunk of the cage and floorspace and lowers the substrate in that area. I'd go for the Barney

Thanks for all the info everyone I decided in the end to buy the Alaska cage from Zooplus and a few accessories at the same time. So excited for it to arrive and then I will buy the rest of the things I need next week, and go and adopt a little hamster

I have the alaska for one of my roborovskis and really like it. The plastic shelf I found pretty ugly and useless, same with the ramp and house but no probs as I just used an upside down fruit box for her wheel, sand bath and food dish.

How exciting to be getting a hamster next week!

Excellent - and you'll have more to spend on accessories now The house on the shelf could do to be removed as the entrance holes are a bit small for a syrian hamster - especially when they start to grow and could get stuck, but the shelf is fine without the house. I have a large flat topped wood house in our hamster's cage instead of a shelf (the roof acts as a shelf).

I am really impressed with the Alaska Cage. I got one as a temporary cage for my Syrian girly (currently living with my parents whilst waiting for a house sale to complete!) as her normal cage is too big for here.

I love the height and base depth and I just think it's great value for money! I did add some cable ties to the sides for added stability and I used a different shelf but other than that it didn't need any modifications. And Honeys Senior Wodent Wheel fits in it too.
