white mist on cage after using dettol
i have sent a msg to somebody about this but i thought id pop it on here as im quite worried i havnt rinsed my hamster cage and toys properly, my ham died yesterday for those who dont know, so i threw it all in the bath and soaked it in detol and tryed rinsing it as best as i could because we have no shower head, now i can see a white mist all over the clear plastic cage, and toys, and im worried it could harm my new ham and it also looks awful now! should i rinse everything again to make sure? and how long do i need to leave cage b4 new hamster goes in?

Re: white mist on cage after using dettol
hiya, maybe the bleach in the product has taken the colour out? does it wipe off?? if it doesnt wipe off i guess its colour damage. once you have washed it off it should be ok for a hamster unless you can see residue on the plastic???

Re: white mist on cage after using dettol
it does sort of lol, i just licked my finger and ran it over the cage and it goes clear, but then it goes back to how it was!
Its just the clear plastic items that have no colour!!! the coloured items are ok, i think i will rinse it all again and leave it to dry overnight because im getting my hamster 2mro!!

Re: white mist on cage after using dettol
This happened to us too, the white is just a residue from the dettol, it just means there is still some on it, we just gave ours another good rinse then a good clean with pet cage cleaner and in the end it went back to normal. You just need to go over it a couple of times until you've got it all off.

Re: white mist on cage after using dettol
We have never had this problem. I know many people will not use dettol but when there has been a sick hamster in the cage previously we feel more secure knowing it has been well disinfected. Fill the bath with warm water and put it back in then take a sponge and scrub it all down to rub the mist off. None of our clear lids have done this. You didn't use a scratchy pad and scratch the plastic did you as this can make the plastic go misty?

Hiya,
just thought i would say that yes, this is very harmful to your hamster, it is the cleaning substance that you have been using!!
The best thing to do is take the whole cage outside and rinse it well with the hose pipe and then wipe it over with a clean damp cloth and leave it to dry completely in the sun

Re: white mist on cage after using dettol
If the residue is still on the plastic and still easily wiped off with your finger / hand etc. then you really need to get your hamster out quick!
If he / she licks it, or even gets it one it's paws, and then grooms itself, it will either be very ill, or it could even die!!
You really need to rinse it again with clean water!

Re: white mist on cage after using dettol
Think i might have mis read your post i thought that if your wiped it wish something damp it came off.
If it is not coming off when you rub it with a damp cloth, then you probably have nothing to worry about
