Minimum cage size?
Do the RSPCA still have a recommended minimum size? I went to quote it to someone, but can't find mention of size anywhere in their material.

Re: Minimum cage size?
It was taken off their online materials, they don't give out numbers any more.
I have the old pdf saved and this is the old guidelines.

Re: Minimum cage size?
The Blue Cross have a minimum of 60x30x30 but then they go on to say that taller is better because hams love to climb so take that advice with a grain of salt
WoodGreen animal charity gives 80x50cm which is much more like it.

Re: Minimum cage size?
The RSPCA have a little book on Hamster care, which we got when we got our Hamster and I think it has the minimum size in there. I believe the latest minimum size they quoted was 80cm by 50cm - that's continuous floorspace, and there are a few cages that size - the Hamster Heaven, the Alaska from Zooplus. Most people go bigger if they can but 80 x 50 is still a good size. In Germany the minimum size is 100cm x 50cm.
This is the RSPCA book. What I do remember it saying is you are unlikely to find a commercial cage big enough and they give ideas for making a diy cage that is big enough - but maybe they hadn't heard of Zooplus! Who have 2 or 3 suitable cages!
Care for Your Hamster (RSPCA Pet Guide): Amazon.co.uk: RSPCA: 9780008118303: Books
This is the Zooplus link. On this page, the Hamster Heaven, Alexander, Barney and Alaska are all suitable sizes for a Syrian Hamster

Re: Minimum cage size?
99p for the kindle edition is hard to say no to! I didn't realise you could get that digitally!
Edit: No numbers in this edition unfortunately, just "as big as you can"

In a way it's a shame that they've got rid of the numbers. We know that some people will interpret that to mean that it's okay to buy a small cage because that's all that they could buy from the pet shop or whatever.

Re: Minimum cage size?
It is soooo annoying that pet shops sell such teeny cages. Not teeny prices either.

Re: Minimum cage size?
I think the last time I bought a Mini Duna, it was about £30.
Admittedly it was over three years ago now but if only I'd have known about ZooPlus or making bin cages back then.

I didn't know you could get it by Kindle either! Sounds good.
