Pee-Proofing Wooden Wheels/Platforms?

I have a wooden platform (Ikea Knuff) and a wooden wheel (Trixie 28cm). I've heard about hamsters peeing on their wheel and wouldn't be surprised if Dandi tried to pee under the platform too and want these to last as long as possible.

How do you make them pee-proof? I've ordered some clear plasti-kote but can't imagine 58ml will go that far and will it not come off if washed as it's water based? Would it be possible to use non-toxic pva ?

Plastikote dries like a clear varnish, doesn't wash off & is great for pee proofing wood, a small jar does go quite a long way but if you have a wheel & shelves you may need more, I always give wheels two or three coats but shelves would probably be ok with one.
