I think I read it on an Amazon review. The centre panel knocks out easily apparently which makes a bit more room inside and makes the corners less tight to get round. Also I think there is a floor area to part of it and that's supposed to knock out easily as well.

I've lost faith in wooden houses and toys since I found mite larvae on 2 houses and a wooden bridge in Willie's cage after she died. Both houses were plastikoted but it didn't stop them laying eggs in cracks. It's such a hassle disinfecting wood (i thought it was easy in the oven but it only kills live mites and u have to keep repeating it) that with my boys i've gone back to cardboard which they love and is replaceable monthly (it has to be weekly at the moment!) without too much expense or change for them.

That's a good point Herbi. Wood can harbour mites/eggs in little cracks if the hamster gets mites and it can be expensive replacing accessories. I guess we just have to hope a hamster doesn't get mites. I'm paranoid about freezing any wood or hay items before using them. I don't think a new house would have a problem like that though, so Flower Fairy needn't worry

I only freeze the wood items in case of woodworm lol. Hay items I freeze in case there are mites in the hay but that might be a bit overzealous!

We have the leif cabin and Barnaby seems to love it. His nest is dug into the substrate, underneath the ramped area of the house. His nest goes all the way down to the base of the cage, so about 5 inches deep under the surface.

I haven't tried knocking out the floor or the middle wall yet, but I think I will give it a go - If anything, to help us spy on him.

I did think about it but you still have to pay return postage and I decided to use them as platforms for added interest. Both hamsters have now started sleeping in them!
