Default Is this hammock hamster safe?

Gosh, I'm posting so many threads in this forum that I feel like I should just make a "Jenibelle's Questions!" thread >.>

Anyways, is this hamster safe?

I wouldn't use it tbh, it might get chewed & wouldn't be good if ingested & I'd worry that little claws would keep getting caught in the mesh.

If you really wanted to, you might be able to clip some fleece over it, but then it's kinda pointless! :P

I was told fleece was dangerous to have in the cage too, so I was kind of looking for a fleece alternative :/

Hi Jenibelle, ideally, hamsters shouldn`t have hammocks as they are not true climbers but more burrowers. Many owners use those plastic Sputnik devices that hang over a shelf inside the cage from the roof bars, but for me, they are not necessary, but are a safer alternative as long as they have a solid shelf beneath because a hamster will just climb into one and then drop like a stone when trying to get out, so it`s important that they have accessories that are....accessible! If you know what I mean!

Same with fleece. It`s material and could be chewed and made dangerous. Mice cope better with such things but mice are far more agile. Chinese hamsters are the best climbers of the hamster species but even then, precautions have to be taken. x

That makes a lot of sense. If there is no need for hanging places, then there is no need. I assume they would have more fun with extra substrate, which is cheaper anyway!

I have hammocks in May's cage and she adores them. She's a Chinese Hamster and is an exceptionally good climber, however I wouldn't have introduced them to her cage unless I was sure that there was a low risk of her getting hurt if she were to fall. The ones I use are Fuzzbutts ones that have been sewn in such a way to minimise the opportunity for chewing but even so, I wouldn't even consider putting one in the cage of a hamster who chews at their environment.

The main fear I had with hammocks or hanging other hanging equipment when I kept mice, was watching my mice use them and then see one of them stepping off the hammock onto the shelf floor and catch a back claw and repeatedly jerk her leg to get loose. Now even though she managed this, I worried that this could happen when I wasn`t watching and goodness knows, I could have found a mouse with a dangling broken leg. So I removed the hammock and ended up using a sponge cotton covered igloo (sold on Fuzzbutts back then) but not a Fuzzbutts product. I stood this igloo ON the shelf rather than use the thin ropes and clips to have it as a hanging toy and it was a much safer way to let the mice use it without the worry of becoming trapped in an awkward position. I cut off the hanging ropes and just used the igloo as a cosy nest for the girls and they had some off-cuts of fleece thrown in and some toilet paper!

Hamsters on the other hand are not quite as savvy as mice, so it pays to be vigilant and check the accessory for any loose threads or tears IF you must use them. But personally, I would rather hang a cardboard box like a Terry`s Chocolate Orange box with some shredded paper inside and use that! x

Some people use the grass mats to make hammocks for syrians & they can work really well, obviously you need to take care how you arrange things, no big drops, but they can be useful to make another small level or place to hang out.
