Smile Litter or sand for hamster potty?

Hello!

My syrian is currently using an old cookie jar ~(See image & without lid)~ as a potty and it's always worked well. But recently she has been kicking all of the sand out.

I was wondering why this is? Is there too much? Does she want somewhere to dig? And would you recommend litter over sand?

I have the little white hamster litter balls that I could try again and hope she doesn't kick that out too!

Thanks

We currently have a sand bath in a cookie jar in one corner and a litter box with the litter balls in what used to be his chosen pee corner. Recently he has ignored his old pee corner and has started using the cookie jar/sand as a toilet instead, so I'm just going to remove the potty and balls altogether. So it's not unheard of for them to change their mind about what they like to do their business in.

I've used both and Charlie kicks both out lol! I think it's just something they do. I am sticking with sand because at least if he kicks it out, it won't contaminate his food - if he wants to eat sand in his hoard fine! But potty litter can be dangerous if eaten.

I think the sand is safer as the litter isn't good for them if they ingest it. I've found that the chinchilla sand (NOT dust) is the best for odour control and clumping, children's play sand is ok but not as effective and led to more evident smells. I'm currently using the selective science chinchilla sand. And yes, mine both kick it everywhere aswell lol!

I would love to see Charlie at the kicking business. I'm not sure if it's an attempt to dig a tunnel into it (hitting hard plastic fairly quickly), or if it's a kind of dog type thing to kick sand over the bit they just pee'd in and cover it up - maybe a bit of both! Although you think they'd learn quickly that the sand doesn't go down very far. I use this Chinchilla Sand. I usually get it from Viovet where it's not too expensive and you don't have to spend £20 at Amazon to get it as an add-on item. It's not cheap, but I just use it for the potty now so it lasts well and doesn't work out too expensive. I gave up having a sand bath for Charlie because he didn't use it (kicked the sand out and turned it into a cosy second nesting area).
