Advice on homes for two dwarf hamsters
Hi all,
I've recently inherited two Russian dwarf hamsters (it was either I take them or they were going to be put down). Having previously owned hamsters I had some cages already, but I've never had two in the Sam cage, and I'm not sure any of them are suitable. I have:
- ferplast mini duna
- pets at home medium plastic cage
- savic sky metro
I discounted the savic as I thought the bars would be too wide to house two Russian dwarves securely. I've housed them in the ferplast for the time being as it seemed very slightly larger than the pets at home cage, but it still looks too small for both of them.
Can anyone advise what cages would be suitable for housing both of them? I'm not keen on bin type cages.
Thanks in advance

Re: Advice on homes for two dwarf hamsters
Welcome to the forum! Well done rescuing two little hams in need :3
The sky metro would actually be okay if they are adults, the bar spacing is 1cm which is maybe a bit risky for little dwarf babies but adults should be fine. I don't have dwarfs myself but I have seen plenty of dwarfs in 1cm spaced wire cages. I would remove the tubes and levels though and keep it to a single space, it will give them less to potentially fight over. Am I right in thinking the mini Duna and the medium p@h cage both have levels? They also both have 1cm spacing on their doors and stuff as far as I know so if they're not escaping the duna they will probably be fine in the Savic.

Re: Advice on homes for two dwarf hamsters
So good to hear you've given these two little ones a home, well done!
I agree with Shannon that the Savic would be the best of the three, definitely without the tubes, I keep russian dwarfs in cages with 1cm bar spacing with no problems, they are a bit chunkier than the other dwarf species!
As Shannon said it's best not to have any shelves or levels & you need to have two of everything basically, you can also scatter feed rather than use bowls for food which will help avoid squabbles.
Size wise it is a little small for a pair but not too tiny so they should be ok.

Re: Advice on homes for two dwarf hamsters
Ah great that's smashing - saved myself some money in that case!
They're about 6-7 months old, so probably as big as they're going to get. I already have two of everything, although I could have saved some more money as they always run together on one wheel!
I'll let them know to get ready for the big move tomorrow!!
