Default Mamble or Barney

I am looking at both of these cages, from browsing the forum I can see the Barney is more popular but was wondering if there is a review for the mumble or a comparison thread somewhere?

I'm not sure if there is. I think before the Barney changed from an 80cm to a 100cm cage, the Mamble was popular as a fairly cheap 100cm cage. Now that gap has narrowed a bit as the Barney doesn't cost that much more and is probably the better cage. It comes in one piece and the Mamble is supposed to be a bit of a pig to put together, but not impossible. As the Mamble is so tall it also needs careful setting up and shelves and levels adding to avoid falls, which adds to its cost so doesn't make it any cheaper than the Barney then. The Barney also has 7mm bar spacing so it makes it a bit more futureproof as it's suitable for either a dwarf or a syrian hamsters, whereas the Mamble is only really good for a Syrian, having 1cm bar spacing.

I have a little friends cage and they are not really sturdy. I had to cable tie the corner as my Syrian tried to escape because the cage is out of line (manufactured like that) I would personally go with the barney any day of the week

this is about the review on the mamble 100 on amazon

Thank you for finding the thread I have been using the search function

I liked the idea of hammocks etc, but it maybe because I have rats and because of the height of their cage I use them.

Is there anything other than the Barney that I maybe missing.. I have a under £100 budget so I am sure there is plenty of choice out there and I am just to dumb to find it.

Hammocks aren't always such a good idea for hamsters - they can still fall between hammocks and don't have good eyesight - plus it depends on the hamster. Our hamster isn't a chewer - until I put a hammock in and he started to chew it. For a hamster that chews hammocks, you have to take them out or they can get digestive blockages. I stick to wood and plastic in the cage now. Hamsters are better with a lower cage really - so they can't fall more than about 25cm and then land on something soft like deep substrate. Setting up the cage can be quite a feat sometimes, making sure there is nothing hard they can fall on from a height - eg putting ceramic dishes or wood bridges, underneath something else like a shelf or sputnik. I think the Mamble really needs a full level in it, or two overlapping shelves, to make it safe for a Hamster.

Thank you for that serendipity,I would have gone hammock mad.. I had not taken their eyesight into consideration big rookie mistake waiting to happen there..

With the majority plastic homes do I not run a risk of respiratory illness with the ammonia in the wee?

I have a mamble & agree you'd probably do better with something like the Barney or Alexander, the mamble is a really nice size but the height does make safety quite a challenge!
The main advantage of the mamble is that it does have larger doors, the barney & alexander do have really tiny doors which can make access to your ham or getting things in or out of the cage, spot cleaning etc difficult without having to take the top off, unfortunately the only cages with large doors tend to be smaller like the alaska, hamster heaven or savic mickey or taller like the mamble or borneo (only available from Germany) so you need to think about what's more important for you & your ham & give some thought to how you plan to set up the cage.

By plastic homes I guess you mean houses for sleeping in? I would definitely avoid plastic, go for a wooden one, you may need to paint the inside with plastikote to protect it from being peed on but they are a lot healthier than plastic & most plastic ones tend to be too small anyway.

Thanks cypher..

Thankfully I'm in no rush so I can hunt around.. Large doors would be ideal come to think of it, however I'm sure that you can work around the con of small doors..

By majority plastic I meant the cages, some I like seem to only have top mesh ventilation and I do worry that it may lead to respiratory problems.. I want the best for my fuzz so I am sorry for all of the questions.

As a barred cage, I would go with the Barney every time. It`s not too tall that it might cause accidents. However, I`m a tank-style cage fan and if I was looking to purchase a new, universal cage, I would look no further than the Ferplast Maxi Multi ....or whatever the name is! It`s big, has a safe narrow barred secure grill on top and the entire lid can be removed also. It`s a no brainer for me. x
