Do I have enough ventilation in my bin cage?
I recently bought a rescue Syrian and he is about a year old and he lives in a 110 qt bin cage or 360 Sq in. The minimum cage size for hammies . I can't go bigger right now or I would but I have a Kleenex size large rectangular hole cut out of the lid. That's it .He seems absolutely fine with it but I worry about the summer when it's more humid?.
Do you think this current bin set-up will provide enough ventilation for him? I do have air conditioning but it still get humid in the summer where I live...
I can also put him in a 20 gal long tank if that would be better?

His current cage sounds fine but I would cut one or two very large holes in the lid and mesh them. That should fix the ventilation problem (:

Re: Do I have enough ventilation in my bin cage?
He has one very large hole cut out of the lid but not the sides.
I can't cut holes into the sides cause the plastic is too thin. I thought I would tape screen to the top of the cage to keep hair out if that could even happen with the fans blowing?
Edit: I didn't see the two holes you posted...there wouldn't be any more room to cut holes in the lid...unless I cut two smaller holes on each side of the larger center hole cut out.
It was very difficult cutting the one hole out so I wouldn't have the the help to do anything else to the lid.

The sides if the bin are tall and wide making it roomy for him...

Re: Do I have enough ventilation in my bin cage?
It does sound like a bit more ventilation could be needed. Having a meshed hole on the side would create through ventilation (ie air can get in and be drawn up). If this isn't possible, I've seen some people cut out the whole lid except for the very edges where it fits onto the base, and mesh that. How big is the 20 gallon long tank (I'm better in measurements than gallons!). I think 30 gallon is supposed to be minimum, but not sure - a US member might know.

Re: Do I have enough ventilation in my bin cage?
It measure 12 x 30 in or 360 Sq inches ..actually the same! Maybe that would be better? I would just have to figure out how to get a water bottle in there for him...I'm sure I could come up with something? That's probably the way to go...
Or better yet is to go to a hardware store and have them cut a much larger hole in the top & maybe duct tape mesh just to make sure he couldn't climb the water bottle & escape..haven't seen him try that tho..not yet anyways
I like the plastic cause it muffled out the noise & he can reach the lid of the 20 gal tank & push it up
Looks like I'll have to go to a hardware store if I can
Ipdate: I'm having a friend bring industrial scizzors over & just cut a larger hole in the top & drill holes in the sides

Cheeky monkey pushing the lid up. Sounds like the tank might be better and put something on the lid to hold it down maybe.

Re: Do I have enough ventilation in my bin cage?
U think so? Maybe I'll try that then? Worth a try?
Update: with the glass tank I can't get the water bottle higher than 3 1/2 inches off the ground & with bedding in there it will be less than 3 1/2".
The bin cage is 5 " off the ground...perfect height for him
Definitely has to be the bin cage if I want to be able to keep him?
He can't get returned cause I rescued him.

Re: Do I have enough ventilation in my bin cage?
A heavy book?! Problem is you might forget so a permanent thing would be better for holding it down. How about velcro between the side and where the lid fits? Or some kind of attachable lock that sticks onto the glass side and hooks onto the lid - at two sides. Yes diy store might be best!

Re: Do I have enough ventilation in my bin cage?
What about the water bottle problem? I'm putting the smallest water bottle in at a height that reaches to the top of the cage?
I think I'll leave him in the bin cage..he has more room in there...a good water bottle..with a larger hole cut out he should be ok?
Thanks for all your help..at least now I know to increase the air flow in the bin cage even if it's not perfect!
