Re: Guide to suitable hamster Wheels
whats the best wheel for a fairly large syrian who likes to chew? plan to attach it to the roof I'm going to make for my tank, so needs to be quite sturdy. looked at the ones suggested but can't make my mind up

Re: Guide to suitable hamster Wheels
Hmm. Do you think your hamster would chew plastic? Most of the wheels are plastic or wood, but Virtual Keith has a metal Raptor wheel.

so far he's never chewed plastic much, never chewed his current wheel but thats quite a thick plastic so probably wouldn't get his chops round it, read some reviews where people go through quite a few wheels because their hamsters have chewed the track or joining strip

Re: Guide to suitable hamster Wheels
So the Wodent wheel and Silent Runner might be an issue then. The Silent Spinner is open but doesn't spin. I don't think the California Storm wheel would be big enough for a large Syrian (10" diamater). You could try him with a Wobust wheel. I had one for our large Syrian. He might be less likely to chew it because there is so much space inside - but basically it's the same design as the Wodent wheel.
I can't remember if you're in the UK or the US. If you're in the US the Raptor wheel that Virtual Keith has might be an option (there are various models and you'd need the solid track not the mesh track). But when I looked at the cost of getting one to the Uk it was way too expensive.
There's always the 12" comfort wheel. They can be a bit noisy and I believe they don't last that long, but it's an open wheel and big enough.
I would go with the 12" Wobust wheel (the 27cm Wodent isn't quite big enough for a large syrian I found) - because even if it gets a bit chewed, you can buy replacement parts for it instead of a whole new wheel. Someone has one hung in a tank on this thread (might be the wodent rather than Wobust but same idea). Scroll down the page for photos.

Re: Guide to suitable hamster Wheels
hi serendipity, im in the uk and the wheel would have to be deathly silent, hamlet shares sleeping space with me and I'm a very light sleeper. been looking at this one - Wodent Exercise Wheel - Senior on Sale | Free UK Delivery
its the wodent wheel senior on pet planet but don't know if he'd give it a nibble. so far he's not chewed anything thats not chewable. like the idea of the wooden wheels but think he'd chew the ends of it.

Re: Guide to suitable hamster Wheels
If you want something that silent I'd get the 12" Silent Runner and stand it in the tank - it has a sturdy base and is deathly silent!
It's not cheap but it's a great wheel. The larger holes make it easier to give it a wipe inside. It fits together like the wodent wheel.
Silent Runner 12"
Wodent wheels are quiet but I wouldn't call them silent and some can develop a squeak - although that can be solved by oiling the spindle with a bit of veg oil sometimes. The Silent Runner has ball bearings to make it run smoothly and quietly.

Aw, Charlie looks so snug in his blanket
Would the 12" Silent Runner fit in the Hamster Heaven cage? I'm going to have to upgrade Gus's wheel soon - he seems to be growing every day! It's also quite noisy, even with the spindle oiled. It's no where near as loud as other wheels that I've owned but as he's residing right next to my bed; the quieter the better!

Re: Guide to suitable hamster Wheels
It was a bit of a squeeze getting my 9" silent runner in the hamster heaven, not at all sure a 12" would fit!

Oh no - I was really hoping to get him a larger wheel! I guess the 9" would be better than the 8" but it's a lot of money to pay if I'm going to have to upgrade again, and by the sounds of it, upgrade his cage too!
