Default Savic Penthouse Help!

Hi guys,

New to this site, we have just bought a Savic Hamster Heaven off Gumtree and it has been sent without the penthouse attachment? Does anyone know where I can get the right one with a tube attachment? Can't find it anywhere online

Hi alexrovers & welcome
I doubt you'll find just the penthouse & tubes tbh, did it come with the stoppers to close off the holes where the tubes go? If it did I would just use it as it is, personally I think it's better that way & have never used the tubes or penthouse with mine.
If you don't have the stoppers you should be able to find those online.

You can buy all that stuff off Amazon.
I'd recommend getting a Savic Spelos (around £20 from Pets at Home), though, to act as a house. You can use one of the included elbow tubes to connect the Spelos to the Savic, and then another to make an easy way up from the pink platform. That way you'd have a large house that can fit another house inside, and a potty if you want, and if necessary the whole thing can be used as a travel cage.

The above is all assuming 1) you're in the UK, and 2) you have those little yellow connector things to stick on the cage to attach the tubes to.

Gonna second Jeir, I had a combi 1 in that arrangement which is very similar. It's perfect as a travel cage, it's a very attractive nesting spot if you fill the whole thing with bedding then if you need to go anywhere you just pop the tube off, put a blocker in and away you go. They don't even need to wake up

The penthouse is small and badly ventilated in my opinion, I don't use mine for anything if I even still have it.

We have 2 hamster heavens in use in my family for Syrians and the penthouse is not used in either cage. The advice by Jeir and Shannon is the best.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the advice and replies. We are in the UK and are new to hamsters, why does everyone seem to not like the penthouses?

We haven't been given any stoppers so we will have to buy some either online or at Pets@Home.

Got conned at bit really as we bought it off Gumtree and my friend picked it up for us. It has a small taped up crack in it and didn't come with anything that the picture had.

I think the problem with the penthouse & the tubes is lack of ventilation & size hams will often decide to sleep, eat & pee in there which can get really unhealthy & lead to a lot of cleaning being needed which is upsetting for the ham, if it's a new ham they often hide in the tubes making it stressful for both them & the owner when it comes to tempting them out & taming.
Hamsters really don't need the plastic tubes, they do far better with lots of deep substrate to burrow in & a few cardboard tubes to play in if you have them!

Cypher is right. I have all the tubes and penthouse unused since new. Now I don't even use either shelf because the plastic ladders are not easy for little feet to get up. Then the plastic pods become to small as a Syrian grows. After reading on here I planned my own cage inside. The wheel is also too small for a Syrian after only a few weeks. It is a good sized cage and with good deep substrate (I use Fitch) a nice big wooden house (flat roof means an extra shelf) a proper wheel, potty in the favoured pee corner, cardboard tubes, wooden bendy bridges/ladders, Sputnik, extra shelf etc and you have a happy ham! Lots of photos on here will give you ideas. Once you start looking you never stop thinking about how to make things better! I bought some things from Pets@home but look at zooplus and viovet and pet planet online for ideas and prices. For a Syrian always go large. Most hamster stuff is too small in the end.

That is very unfortunate but a risk of buying off gumtree the accessories the cage comes with is the reason it's usually so expensive new so I hope you didn't get too fleeced! Some good strong glue would probably fix the crack, so long as the surface stays flush the ham shouldn't even notice the crack is there. So long as it's not something they can get their teeth into it probably won't be an issue.

Tube stoppers are on Amazon but they're unfortunately fairly expensive. If you get the ferplast ones they also fit and so will pets at home brand ones if you can ask in a store for them. I'm not 100% sure if they sell the end caps in store normally but they should be able to get you some.

Some people like the penthouses well enough but they're pretty small and plastic tends to causes condensation if they nest in there so it's not great loss if you haven't got it. The only thing that makes the hamster heaven worth the extra price (it's usually £65+ over a same sized Alaska which is £35) is that it's expandable so if you're going to have another cage on the top it might as well be something bigger rather than a teeny tiny penthouse
