Suitable Hamster Cages
Hi!
I thought this would be a useful thread to make since it is so easy to become mislead when picking a suitable hamster cage.
What cages would you recommend for hamsters?

Re: Suitable Hamster Cages
I'd recommend the Detolf cage and because I'm too tired to write out a full paragraph, I'll make a pros and cons list
Pros:
- Provides MUCH more room than required
- VERY large glass tank for the price
- Deep enough to provide lots of substrate/bedding
- Easy to make lids for
- You can easily view your hammy through the glass
- Can be combined with other IKEA units
Cons:
- Hard to fit into many spaces
- Somewhat difficult to assemble
- Syrians will require lids
- Somewhat expensive

Re: Suitable Hamster Cages
I would love a deltolf for dwarf hamsters, but unfortunately, I don't think it would be tall enough for the proper wheel size for a syrian.
I agree though that it would be so great to be able to see your hamster really well.
I do tend to like bar cages because I think they get the best ventilation, but then there's always the risk of getting a hamster who is a bar chewer.

A detolf would be the best option if you have the money and space.. otherwise a bin cage is the best.

Re: Suitable Hamster Cages
Detolf is absolutely tall enough for a 28cm wheel keith, you just have to keep the bedding to a minimum in that area of the cage I love my Detolf a lot but it really can't be exaggerated how hard it is to find somewhere to put the damn thing.
I like any cage that's 80x50cm or bigger and not more than maybe 60cm tall, I'm not at all fussy. The Alaska and the Barney seem to be the best value for barred cages of a decent size and the Zoozone 2 or a bin cage is probably the best option for a tank-style cage if you can't get your hands on an actual tank.

Re: Suitable Hamster Cages
A lot depends on the hamster, species & nature so there's no best cage/tank really.
Personally I prefer barred cages, I like the ventilation & interaction they allow, I always look for large front opening doors & don't like top access alone & I tend to go for cages of at least 80x50cm, larger if possible but some hams do prefer a smaller space so you really need to get to know your ham!
Cages I have that I've been happy with are the Marchioro Kevin (sadly no longer available in the UK) the Alaska & Hamster Heaven (the HH is probably my least favourite) from Zooplus & the Borneo large from Amazon.de.

Re: Suitable Hamster Cages
Little Bears Hamster Rescue (Hc member SynNix) did some great info sheets on suitable hamster cages. Like Cypher said, a lot depends on your hamster & your circumstances. For example, while the detolf is great for some, some hamsters are persistsnt chewers so the bars make it not great or they are overwhelmed by spac. A lot of owners (myself included) don't have the space or some aren't confident at making a secure lid.
I personally favour a tank for a few reasons but the lack of front access is a downside when taming. My Syrian's tank is 70cm long (I think) as the next size up was a 100cn and I don't have room. But while my tank sounds smaller than some of the cages, I don't lose any floor space to the sloping base.
It's great to have a list of suitable cages and then pick one according to you and your hamster's needs.

Re: Suitable Hamster Cages
I would recommend the Kerry terrarium which is 75x45x37 (L,W,H)
Despite its not so massive size it is a very good tank and even comes with a seesaw and 2 hideaways
Pros:
• wire at the top already for ventalation/ good bar spacing
• comes with seesaw and hideaway
• 37cm is pretty high so can fit wheels up to 31cm!
Cons:
•size
You can find this cage on zooplus a site which I very much recommend, this is free to get delivered in the UK as it is over £29.00

Re: Suitable Hamster Cages
Kerry terrarium is quite a nice tank but one other con along with most glass tanks to think about is weight! Some people might find that a problem.

Re: Suitable Hamster Cages
It's the kerry terrarium that I have (75cm not 70cm then!). I really like it but I have it on a wheely table from ikea as it's too heavy for me to move. You also need a spare cage if you need to take them to pet sitters for holidays as it's too heavy to get in the car!
I have a duna multy which I'd recommend for a dwarf but is only tall enough for an 8 inch wheel. The multy maxi I believe is tall enough but is about 1m long (too long for the space I have). My agoraphobic robo lives in a mini duna which I like so I'd recommend that for a hospital tank or a travel cage.
