If you're making a bin cage, you don't even need to use cage doors, you could just make a lid out of small guage mesh from a diy shop.
Have you decided what sort of cage it is that you want - any particular brand or model?

get a dwarf hamster to go on top... thats what i have done for now :P, the 84 lt box has really high sides, and with another stacked on top though there is good enough gaps for vetilation, there is no chnce of a hamster escape, and unless my dwarfs figure out flight they will not get out the top one!!
i m sure that you will see or think up the right cage for you.
just relax, see the fun in the hunt!

If you want to have your ham where you can enjoy watching it and its antics while it is in the cage I would not go for a bin. They are not that attractive also if you keep the hamster on 'public view' or in the lounge or something. Don't let it be stressful but wait and you will get the right one. The fernplast rainbow is good and you can watch the hammy in it easily or see our cage on emmas cage poll. It cost 24.99. You need to think where you want to keep it and what will fit and then choose the biggest, best you can afford and I'm sure your new pet will be happy.
