I used to get the odd blue bit in but not in the creamy batch so far. When I phoned them that time she said they hadn't changed the manufacturer and it was all human food grade paper it just depended what type of paper they had at the time. I'm not sure I believe it either lol! It changed after they were out of stock for some time, but she did say they hadn't had a change in manufacturing. I think it is slightly less soft, but softer than wood shavings.

I don't think the 1kg is quite as small as it sounds as the stuff is quite light. If it's a tenth of my 10kg bag it's probably about the same size as a bag of Carefresh or maybe a bit bigger.

It's probably not a bad size if you just want a sample to try but looking at my 10kg bag I'm thinking that starting from scratch with empty cages I'd be lucky to fill my three with that!
I guess I'm just used to big sacks of substrate

Carefresh is vacuum packed though isn't it - I used three 10L packs of Carefresh to fill Glowy's barney cage, and I reckon It might have taken the best part of the 10kg Carefresh bag to fill it. The Carefresh is such a hit with him tho, he's been gathering it up and making a new nest in his Sputnik with it!

I get confused between litres and kg sizes! I just looked at my 10kg bag of Fitch and thought a tenth of that would fill a cage with some to spare.

I'm confused now lol! I don't think you can really compare litres & Kg but I'm wondering if you have a 20kg bag Serendipity? I just measured my 10kg bag again & it's 30x40x40cm so by my reckoning if you had a cage that was only 30x40 you'd still only get 20cm depth in it twice!
If we don't do full cage cleans I think we forget just how much goes in there & having only recently filled Whisper's cage I know it was a lot!

Fitch sells Megazorb, which is in litres. 85ltr x 2 = 170ltr = 25kg (roughly, according to Fitch). So, 170/25 = 6.8ltrs = 1kg.

As Megazorb is roughly the same price as Fitch (£26/25kg, compared to £21/20kg), I was considering getting that instead of Fitch's own stuff next time I need to buy substrate. My main concerns would be dustiness (with Carefresh being super-dusty, and Hemparade and Fitch being mid-low dust); how easy it is to make tunnels and/or be flattened down (two of my dwarves love to dig, while my third is a little wobbly on his legs and the larger Fitch pieces can be a slight annoyance for him), and; if it'd cause tangles in my Syrian's long hipfluff. Any thoughts? And, apologies for the thread hijack.

Megazorb has to be the dustiest substrate I ever tried, I know some people like it but I can barely open a bag without having an asthma attack!
It's not bad for burrows though.

Where's the cheapest place to get fitch from? It's £6 for a small bail at pets at home so can only use it as a treat

As far as I'm aware you can only get fitch direct from them or via Amazon.
The fitch website is here.
