Is that the 100cm Barney or the 80cm Barney?

May's cage yesterday...
There's a little bit of Carefresh mixed in with the Fitch as we needed to use it up.
She doesn't normally have her sand bath in her cage but as it's hot, I've put it in there for her to sit in and cool off.

Serendipity 7000 - It's the 100cm Barney Cage. It's pretty much taken up most of my bedroom, but Lily's so worth it. And it looks study enough for quite a few years hopefully.

re: Let's see your cages! (From May 2015)
Large-floor-space bins, aquariums, and wire cages seem to be the preference here, but those didn't work for my situation, so I got a modular unit for my female Syrian hamster. I have two Habitrail living units (which by themselves are too small), almost 8 feet of tubing, and four pods/dens. (That's so far. I am already planning on more.) The Habitrail tubing is large enough for her to zoom through easily - she's full grown, and American petshop hamsters are smaller than breeder hamsters. I substituted an 8" Wodent Wheel for the Habitrail wheel because it's larger and I didn't like the round shape of the Habitrail wheel - can it be ergonomic to run miles on a curved surface? My hamster is loving it. She zooms all over - making the loop through her upper main cage and one of the pods, detouring to one den or another, stashing food and playing with toys in her downstairs "space helmet". She sleeps in a small den unit and uses the other small den as a bathroom, which is great because the pieces are so easy to detach and clean. The cage is beside my recliner with one pod where she can climb onto me. We've enjoyed watching her climb through the tubes and stop to say hello. I'm getting another pod next week to use for a sand bath. I've heard some concerns that pods and tubes can be stuffy, but her cage is in an area with constant wind flow (a fan) so she gets plenty of fresh air. She's more active and seems happier than my previous hamster was in her 20-gallon aquarium, so the tubes and pods are working very well for her. It's fun for me, too.

That's not to say she wouldn't be happier in a large-floor-space cage, just that I can see she's happy with what I was able to make for her. If I ever have space to add something like that (hopefully attach it to her current system), I'll jump at the chance. We should be moving in a year or two, so hopefully it'll be in her lifetime.
