I've had a sudden idea to put my female in my other hamsters current bin cage, and give my male the bottom draw of my wardrobe (obviously I won't keep it as a wardrobe and shut it, I'll take it apart and put storage boxes in its place), it's a few inches shorter than detolf I'd guess by looking at it, only issue is its wood, would it be okay if I put some sort of sheet underneath the substrate to reduce chance of the wood soaking up pee? My male hamster is not a chewer at all, he refuses to chew anything other than a specific chew. Please help! It'll save me money and I can move the female into a bigger one sooner!

Tried him in it with a few toys but no bedding, he seems to like it, hasn't scratched at the sides in attempt to get out like he has with previous change of cage.. hm possibly might do it.

After a good 20 minutes of him trying to find an escape route and me putting him back, I think he's accepted it as his new home and is now off in a corner with a mouthful of treats.
