Substrate poll
Just interested to see what everyone is using at the moment and what seems most popular. I am still using comfey pet shavings, partially, mixed in with Fitch. Have also tried Siccofloor but wasn't keen.
Please just select the substrate you use now, as there's only one option. For example I would tick Fitch even though I'm mixing it with shavings, because it is something other than just standard shavings.
If you have lots of hamsters and use lots of different beddings, just select your favourite.

Re: Substrate poll
I've mostly been using Carefresh since I've had Hector & Cleo but do have "emergency" shavings just in case (either I run out of Carefresh or I've got the unlucky bag that smells odd.) Cleo had half & half for her first cage as I didn't have enough of either (silly impulse hamster purchase but how could I leave her?!) & Hector currently has shavings for a different look/texture for a change. They seem to burrow better with Carefresh but sometimes shavings look, I don't know, brighter? Cleaner? Something like that. I'm quite lucky with the Carefresh as my local hardware sells it considerably cheaper than p@h. I think at p@h prices it would be shavings all the way

Re: Substrate poll
I use Fitch. Mainly because i don't live too far away so collect which with having 6 hammies makes it an awful lot cheaper! Though i have noticed every time i go the prices go up!
I too have large bag of snowflake shavings incase i run out or can't get hold of fitch for some reason.

Re: Substrate poll
I've tried a lot of things & me & the hams were happy with hemp for quite a long while but then I discovered Fitch & the rest is history as they say!

Re: Substrate poll
I use shavings as Dali thinks she is a miner and i find that if i do 2:1 shavings and hay her burrows don't collapse on her. Though she uses a mix of paper and tissues for her nesting.

Re: Substrate poll
My vote went to Fitch, I've recently bought another 20kg bag, (I used an entire 20kg in just 2months, I obviously used it for Willow and Ebony but I also used it for the tortoises hibernation boxes and for the bird cages too), anyway it has gone up from £17 to £20, that's £3 in just 2months!

Re: Substrate poll
I use wood shavings for most cage areas and Carefresh in the digbox, and there is a mix of Carefresh, kitchen roll and toilet roll available for the nests. The wood shavings are the standard P@H dust free ones and so far there have been no problems with rabbits or hamsters.

Re: Substrate poll
I've only ever used Fitch and dusted extracted shavings (for the first two weeks until the Fitch came). I really like it, it's extremely cost effective and I've also read about other substrates setting off peoples asthma. Because of all of this and since my asthma's pretty bad I'm hesitant to try anything else.

Re: Substrate poll
Used to use bales of woodshavings from the local pet shop. They weren't branded or even labelled and so I didn't know what they were. Tried a bag of Megazorb which I liked, but since then I've always used Fitch Megazorb didn't last very long and we had to travel a bit to buy it
