Re: Keeping hammy warm while I'm at work
I dunno what elevated base means, but i'm guessing maybe there's just extra metal at the base and the bottom of the tank doesn't meet whichever surface it's sat on. my tank is on my floor. But my room is kept very warm and I'm upstairs so no drafts except for the cold air filtering out under my closet door... i put a pillow inside my closet behind the door. I dunno why builders don't insulate bathrooms and closets... at least that's how it is in older buildings

Great idea to insulate the outside of the house too!
Thanks for the welcome
I will be sure to give my hammie plenty of substrate and bedding!
Northern Scotland! Brrrrrrr
Do you mean an oil filled heater? They look like a little radiator on wheels?
I had a look at those they look interesting. Do you happen to know what the wattage of yours is? There is also a flat wall mounted kind which might be good with limited floor space.

I use the oil filled radiators. They're really good and I keep mine on a low setting. You can get a variety of wattages from under 1000 up to 3000. I use the 1500w.

It won't be for a couple of months Chonkers I've got a lot on and want to source everything before shelling out the cash. If you get some experience in the meantime please share!

Yep. It's an oil filled heater. Mine is a 2000w and does look like a little radiator on wheels . I went for a 2000w because the one I chose is a small 9 fin one, also because I didn't want it to take up too much floor space. Depending on the size of the room I'm sure you could get away with a smaller wattage though. Mine only cost £30 on ebay incl delivery. The good thing about these is that once the oil heats up it maintains the heat very well using minimal electricity - plus again I leave it on a low setting. This is not to say that I don't pay a little more during winter on my electric bill but I see it as much the same as running the heater in my fish tank. Another reason I decided on this heater was the safety features which means I'm comfortable leaving it on while I'm out the house.

I just make sure they have loads more bedding and substrate during the winter months and they each have an oil radiator. Plus I hang up my thermal lined curtains for winter.I'm quite lucky as I'm in a flat I have flats on both sides of me and above and below so it's very cosy!

Re: Keeping hammy warm while I'm at work
Ha I can't believe you found this thread! My issue is I have a 19 year old cat who requires a lot of care (in addition to the dog and horse lol). She has her own room separate from my rescued greyhound she accesses by a dog gate with a cat door. That will be the hammy room when it's time. So it's not time yet and the schedule is not in my hands. Can you believe how many posts I've racked up for a non hamster owner? This is such a nice forum I enjoy the people hamster or not. Plus lots of cute hammie pics!

LOLOLOLOL. Do you know Piebald, I completely forgot that you have no hams. Well, when you do get yours, it's going to have an owner with every last bit of hammy info out there! That's a very good thing.
