Duna Fun

Ok, I have been meaning to get a new cage for a long time. Done the research, couldn't find any gabbers so started again and decided on a duna fun. Wanted the maxi, but they don't seem to make them any more. I believe they were a limited number.
Any way headed off to the shops, to purchase the Duna fun, and was excited about attaching to my savic cage so Chloe would have a palace! When the attendant said we should not get it, or really we could not have it with a dwarf winter white, she would get through the bars.

Very disappointed I came away empty handed, wondering what to do next.

Is this the case? I did notice the corner bars aren't strong and can be easily bent, any ideas?

Is this cage similar to a gabber? im not familiar with it. plastic sides wire top? if it is you could always cover the wire section with a fine mesh to prevent them escaping then it would be fine for WW's

Thanks, I had thought of that and didn't really want to spend money and then modify. Seems this could be the only way. Do you know where I can get the mesh?

sorry i dont know for sure however id guess most DIY shops or garden centres will be able to cater for your needs, but tbh i cant imagine it being a problem for WW's if its like the Savic Roddy cages as they have to climb up to the bars before they can slip through them and how likely is it to happen unless you plonk a tall toy directly beneath them? and they may be spaced closely enough anyway, you could always test under supervision.

About mesh try checking out the DIY hamster project seciton of the forum there should be some info there as lots of members make DIY bins for their hammy's using mesh on the lid and for ventilation.

I have already replied in the rody thread, but my robo's lived in a duna fun for 6 weeks without escapees-the bar width are the same as that on a savic spelos (5mm i think) which is a dwarf hamster cage. Go back and get it-if you are unsure if it is hammy proof, stick the cage in the bath for a few days. Then, if there is a way out, you'll know. But honestly, if a robo cant escape, i highly doubt an adult WW will! The shop assistant probably just got told as a general rule, dont sell barred cages with dwarf hammies.

There's no way a WW that is old enough to be sold could squeeze through the standard 1cm barring on a hamster cage. As long as you just have a single WW the Duna Fun will be a great cage.

Unfortunately shop assistants tend not to have any actual "hands on" animal experience, so just repeat what they are told. I suppose they are better saying its not suitable than letting someone with young robos buy the cage and risk an escape, but its always a bit gutting to be told you're trying to buy something "wrong".

the duna fun bars on the side are actually smaller than one cm ( i measured) i am hoping to getthis for my cambells dwarf coal am saving up

I have had dwarf hamsters and robos living in this cage and have never had any escape. For them it was great cause offered plenty of space and interesting environment.
